Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brinscall: Why It Occurs
If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Brinscall. If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.
AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers
Diesel goes to your motor — yet many newer diesels seen around Brinscall and Abbey Village hold another liquid as well. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.
There is a filler on each tank. Many of vehicles share a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet. Diesel goes in at each filling station call-out, again and again. Far less often, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes. The error lives in that gap.
AdBlue in your diesel tank in Brinscall: how it happens
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Withnell Fold Old Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Cricketers.
Then your car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.
Nothing halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it happens in Withnell or the middle of Brinscall, it is the same few seconds.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Withnell Fold or a forecourt around Brinscall.
- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.
- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.
- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Pleasington? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, not when the light goes on.
Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up
A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire that is.
- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not rushed by Lodge Bank on the verge.
- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.
- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.
Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop. Stage five is out.
Brinscall: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?
Brief order, then. Top of that: the motor stays unstarted. Keep the ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone runs your fuel pump. Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.
If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the D.Mayor & Son Coal Merchants or the BP, ask the staff to help push the car away from the petrol pump. At home in Brinscall? Then the car remains put.
Already run? Stop when it's sensible, then turn off. The next exit is where to come off when you're on the M65, under 3 miles from Brinscall. A short hop across Brinscall is a smaller job than a run towards Preston, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.
Brinscall: what takes place when we turn up
Our van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Brinscall War Memorial, or by Brinscall St John's CofE and Methodist Primary School. Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask. You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.
Then your tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly. Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. Hence it counts more. Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed. The engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians leave.
With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

Moving the car isn't necessary. Wherever it sits — near Farmhouse Ruins, in a lay-by en route to Brinscall & Withnell Sports & Social Club, on a drive — that's where it is cleared. Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Site of Cross.
Brinscall drivers: the short version
Before you tip, read the cap. Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
