Broadbridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition too. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing happens until the engine sucks it round. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully purged where the vehicle sits around Broadbridge. First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Broadbridge

Things to do:

  • Take your keys out, so nobody switches your ignition on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting PO18 8, or whatever street is closest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Don't:

  • Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift the car.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.
  • Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch along Penwarden Way.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Broadbridge forecourt — the Esso included — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas. No part inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to travel that way.

It does not blend. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Fishbourne overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be first through once the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and tiny channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. A vehicle left standing around Broadbridge with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Then there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Tesco, and the problem is thinned fuel. Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and left in the tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the next fill will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Broadbridge or out in East Ashling, does more harm than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Not run? Then the AdBlue sits only inside the tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere the vehicle has stopped in West Sussex.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Broadbridge?

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. Usually it is not the filling station: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Hurrying, outside Bosham Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills your car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Old Bridge Road. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The White Swan, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles get it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the other car of a family with one of each fuel types. Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever in Broadbridge or the remainder of West Sussex you happen to be.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Broadbridge?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank. The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Expect rough running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Bosham Cricket Club, say, or midway across Broadbridge. No starting it again to test: pull over once safe, then turn it off. Every start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the A3(M), under 10 miles from Broadbridge, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Broadbridge to park near St. Nicholas Church Hall and a drive of under 5 miles for Chichester are very separate jobs. Let us know about how far it had come.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. If it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Broadbridge: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street beside Bosham Football Club, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Broadbridge, and our van travels to it. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run, since those answers settle the work.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since residue will not wash out unaided. Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it must be. Then clean diesel, and then a check of the vehicle. If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the final step. Then our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by Bosham or a drive around Broadbridge. Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running properly with fresh diesel in. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

Broadbridge: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, and so no single quote would be honest. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Bosham Village Hall.

Which fluid went in, how much, plus if it ran: each Broadbridge call opens by asking exactly that, ahead of any quote, never afterwards. Their answers narrow the range right down to a single number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.
