Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brookfield

Keep your motor and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank. Normally, when your engine has not turned, it is emptied and fully purged where your car is in Brookfield. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many newer diesels in Ribbleton Hall, like those in Brookfield, run on two liquids; your engine gets just your diesel. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for every tank. Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Brookfield: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Croasdale Avenue before work, or in the car park at The Gamull heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Brookfield or out in Grange.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Holme Slack or a forecourt around Brookfield, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Preston.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere across Lancashire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Not in a rush on the side of Watling Street Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — confirm the diesel filler remained shut the whole time. After that, start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to step five.

Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Brookfield already?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the engine. Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Tesco, ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the pump. Your own drive around Brookfield is where it stays.

Already run? Stop when it is safe, then switch off. Brookfield lies under a mile from the M6; on it, take the first exit. About how far did it go? Crossing Brookfield is less a job than a run of under 3 miles towards Preston, and so tell us.

Brookfield: what takes place when our technicians turn up

By Brookfield Community Primary School, near The Ascension Church & Community Centre or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it. Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, since the replies determine this work and the quote. The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then your tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly. More than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes away on its own, no matter how long it sits. Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed. Next we start the car and check it runs properly before leaving.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit. Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.
