Broomhill: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm starts once it is sucked through the lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Broomhill. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Broomhill

To do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting WS11 5, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never do these:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to move your car.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short way down Longfellow Place.
  • No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the vehicle off the island if you're on a forecourt around Broomhill, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or elsewhere. On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the pickup draws its supply from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits underneath the diesel, which is why a vehicle topped up in Blackfords yesterday and never switched on remains the straightforward one, provided nobody touches the key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is cleared out. Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car sitting around Broomhill. Only in that tank, it stays stable. Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it most — the injection pump and each injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Broomhill

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and left in your tank, it does none.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the next fill won't clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Broomhill or out in High Town, does more harm than nearly any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere in Staffordshire the car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

Broomhill: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — can appear the same. No one intends it; plenty of designs invite it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets rushed outside Moorhill Primary School, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Milton Road. Else, in dim light by The White Lion, the car gets topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it most — hire cars, new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with one of each fuels. Keep it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, anywhere in Broomhill or the rest of Staffordshire you happen to be.

Broomhill: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and each injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Cannock Park Golf Course or halfway across Broomhill. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M6 Toll, under 3 miles from Broomhill, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Broomhill to the car park by St Aidan is a very different job from a run towards Lichfield, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to flush once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has stopped. If it's caught soon, permanent damage is very rare.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Broomhill

A road beside Chadsmoor Methodist Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has stopped in Broomhill, we travel to it. The work depends on three answers, which our technicians get first — which fluid went in, the amount, and if the motor has turned over.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. Residue from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than with petrol. After that, your filter: flushed, or changed if it must be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of your car. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when the motor has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The last step is to prime the system on fresh diesel. After that we start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking bay outside Cannock or a driveway in Broomhill. It's tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs correctly before our technicians head off. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Broomhill: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same. Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind St Chad.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Broomhill enquiry opens with precisely that, ahead of any figure, not afterwards. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

The price is given during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
