AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Brownlow? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and your ignition too. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Being water-based, it will not burn and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes when the pump starts pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Brownlow, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Brownlow

Things to do:

  • Pocket your keys, which stops anyone switching the power on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • Which product, and about how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting OL2 6, or simply the name of a street close by, so phone from the spot.

Do not do these:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: your motor remains off.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance up Heyside Avenue.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

At a forecourt in Brownlow, whether it's the Red Rose Filling Station or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle clear of the pump. At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel. Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the pickup sucks from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Shaw Edge last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it would be first through once your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. A car left standing in Brownlow with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water part damages them by itself.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have a problem of thin fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so thinning it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying the engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Luzley Brook or the centre of Brownlow equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Anywhere across Greater Manchester your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest bit of any fuel system to clear.

Brownlow: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it. A bottle bought when heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical route.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The refill gets rushed outside Blackshaw Lane Primary & Nursery School, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken in. In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near Sutcliffe Street. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Duke of York, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Hired cars, new motors, fleet vehicles, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it most. An identical mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Brownlow or the rest of Greater Manchester.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Brownlow, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank. Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Stoneleigh Park, or part way across Brownlow, your motor might go rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.

If you were on the A627(M), under 3 miles from Brownlow, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Brownlow to the car park by St Mark is one thing; driving for Manchester, under 10 miles away, is something else, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it's caught soon.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Brownlow

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a road near St Aidan and St Oswald Catholic Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Brownlow, and our van travels to it. What got in, roughly the quantity, plus if the motor has been run: our technicians ask first, since those shape the work.

Then the tank is drained where the vehicle waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol. The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the engine has not run. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step. Whether it is a parking bay by Mills Hill or a driveway in Brownlow, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off. It's checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we leave. Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Brownlow?

Since each callouts differ, a single price wouldn't be fair. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for a van to get to safely than a tight space behind Royton Leisure Centre.

What got in, what quantity, plus whether it ran: every Brownlow enquiry begins with precisely those, ahead of a quote, never afterwards. When those are answered, a range turns into a single fixed number.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
