AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Brumby? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition as well. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing starts till your engine pulls it round. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully cleaned where your car stands in Brumby. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Brumby: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So nobody can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting DN16 2, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the car.

Not to do:

  • Moving your car even a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Switching your key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on many diesels. Skip it.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue won't mix, and so it's wasted.
  • Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Crowland Avenue.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

The staff working at any Brumby filling station — the Applegreen included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask. On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ashby last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. What is left when the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Brumby with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it's only in that tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Brumby

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the main fault. Mixed through the diesel and sitting unused, it is harmless for now; using the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Deposits and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back from the diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Frodingham or the centre of Brumby equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Lincolnshire the vehicle is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Brumby

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark. A container picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical route.

A few familiar ways account for the majority of them. Hurrying, outside Outwood Junior Academy Brumby, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills the car. A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Spalding Road, as the day ends. Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Lincoln Imp, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, same first response — leave it off — wherever you are around Brumby or the rest of Lincolnshire.

Brumby: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the filter and lines.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Heslam Park, perhaps, or part way across Brumby. Once you safely can, pull over and switch it off — without restarting to see. Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M180, under 3 miles from Brumby, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Brumby to the car park by St Hugh's Church is a very different job from a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been started, and we do all of it where the car has ended up. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it's noticed quickly.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Brumby: what it takes

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Brumby: a side street close to Old Brumby United Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run, since those replies determine this work.

Next, draining the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that's the final step. You head off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Brumby or in a space outside Scunthorpe. We make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel before leaving. The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Brumby

Since each jobs vary, a single figure would not be honest. The price moves first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St Bernadette's Roman Catholic Church.

Before a quote, not after, every enquiry from Brumby opens with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran. Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is given during the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
