Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brunswick Park: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103. A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Brunswick Park, is normally what it needs if caught before the motor runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Southgate, like those in Brunswick Park, carry on two liquids; the motor gets only the diesel. AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank has a filler of its own. Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead. Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly. Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Brunswick Park

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Benfleet Way, or on the way home in the car park outside The York Arms.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part halts the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Osidge or the heart of Brunswick Park: it is the same few seconds either way.

Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Friern Barnet or a forecourt around Brunswick Park, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

  • Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.
  • On many motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside New Southgate.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Greater London that is.

  • Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Brunswick Park Road at the roadside.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.
  • The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Before you start your car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Stage five stays off limits.

Brunswick Park: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor. The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off. Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — BP, Esso or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, when you ask. If you are on your own driveway around Brunswick Park, leave it where it stands.

Already run? Pull over once it is safe, then turn off. Brunswick Park sits under 5 miles from the M1; there, use the next junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards London, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Brunswick Park.

When we get there in Brunswick Park, what happens?

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Brunswick Park Primary and Nursery School, close to Shoghi Effendi or on your own drive. Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since the answers settle this work and the quote. The quote is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle. Then we start it and make sure it runs smoothly before we go.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark. Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
