Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brunthwaite: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103. In Brunthwaite, catching it before the engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels around Brunthwaite and Cringles carry, with diesel for your engine. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank. On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly. The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in the gap between them.

How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Brunthwaite

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Hawber Lane before work, or in the car park at The Robin Hood on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new motor.

No part stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. It takes seconds, whether in High Brunthwaite or bang in the heart of Brunthwaite.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Brunthwaite or a drive out in Steeton. Seconds, no more.

  • Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.
  • On many cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.
  • Lift the flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which goes in which inlet right there.
  • The handbook shows where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Steeton & Silsden's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere around West Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

  • Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Ings Way.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
  • Finish when the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through the own spout.
  • Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there. Skip step five entirely.

Brunthwaite: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. First: your motor remains off. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on. Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Asda or another — the attendants will usually help push the car clear, when you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Brunthwaite.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run. The next exit is where to leave if you are on the M65, under 15 miles from Brunthwaite. Distance matters — a short hop across Brunthwaite makes a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Bradford — so say about how far it went.

When we turn up around Brunthwaite, what happens?

Outside Silsden Primary School, close to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Silsden or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it. Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask. During the call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. That is why it matters more. Once the filter is cleaned — or renewed, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car is tested. The motor is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house. No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
