Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the motor — but many newer diesels seen round Bryn Celyn and Holway carry a second fluid too. Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own. Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side under one flap. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what cap it needs. It's in the gap that the mistake lives.

Bryn Celyn: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Spring Bank, or on the way home in the car park outside Royal Oak.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bryn Celyn or out in Holywell.

The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Pen-y-Ball Top or a forecourt in Bryn Celyn.

  • Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.
  • The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars mark what belongs in each filler right there.
  • The handbook shows which it lives if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Flint? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Flintshire that is.

  • Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Bryn Celyn.
  • Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located the filler and read it.
  • The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.
  • Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there. Leave out stage five entirely.

Bryn Celyn: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that's where the short order of things begins. Leave the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump. Diluting it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Texaco, the Shell or somewhere else. On your own drive in Bryn Celyn? Then your car stays where it is.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then turn off. The next junction is the place to leave when you are on the M53, under 10 miles from Bryn Celyn. A short hop across Bryn Celyn is a smaller job than a run towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

What takes place when our technicians arrive in Bryn Celyn

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, close to Greenfield Mills or on your own drive. Both the work and the price depend on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask. You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after your tank is cleared. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. Once your filter has been flushed — or replaced, where needed — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car is tested. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night. Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
