AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Buckland? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in. If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly purged where your car stands in Buckland. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Buckland: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, and so do not throw it out.
  • Tell us a postcode starting CT16 2, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • Moving your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Even a short stretch up Park Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Beside the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move your car off the pumps if you're on a forecourt in Buckland, whether it's the BP or elsewhere. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same place the pickup sucks from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Tower Hamlets last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it's sucked in, the harm comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there. Lines holding AdBlue spell harm overnight for a car parked around Buckland. Just in the tank, it stays the same. Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a second kind of harm.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the Tesco, and this problem is thinned fuel. No damage comes as long as it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn. Crystals and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so watering it can't help. That is why the flush counts so much, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Dover or the centre of Buckland equally.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Kent the vehicle is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Buckland?

Plenty of motors put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. No one means it. Usually it is not the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

A few familiar ways account for most cases. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Shatterlocks Infant and Nursery School. A driver tips the container in at home, right off Brookfield Avenue, as the day ends. Or a driver new to that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside The Bull.

Hired vehicles, new vehicles, company vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most. Keep it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, anywhere in Buckland or the remainder of Kent you happen to be.

Buckland: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, maybe midway across Buckland or coming back from The Green. Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M20, under 10 miles from Buckland, by the first junction and stop safely, not carrying on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading for Canterbury, under 15 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Buckland to the car park by St. Andrew's. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. If it is spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Buckland: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Anywhere it has stopped around Buckland — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a road by Catholic Church — the van travels to the car. Three answers shape the job, so before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly what quantity, plus if the engine has run.

Then that tank is cleared where the vehicle waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol. Next, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your vehicle. Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the motor hasn't run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Lastly, your system is primed with new diesel. After that we start the car and you drive off, whether from a parking bay by Dover Priory or a driveway in Buckland. It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians head off. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a workshop. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

About Buckland

Buckland is a suburban area in Kent, situated near the coast and approximately 13.6 miles from Canterbury. Buckland occupies a relatively low-lying area, with an elevation of around 18 metres, and is characterized by terraced housing. Buckland is part of the wider urban area surrounding Canterbury, with nearby places including Buckland Valley and St Radigunds. Buckland has a population of around 9864 residents.

Buckland and Kent: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Buckland are passed to vans that serve the places near it — Buckland Valley, St Radigunds as well as Crabble — and much of Kent further out, across CT postcodes. Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

No moving is needed. In Buckland, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is drained on the spot, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

Buckland: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since each callouts vary, a flat figure would not be fair. What moves the cost is, first of all, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind St Nicholas.

For that reason, each enquiry from Buckland begins with the same trio — which fluid went in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of a quote. Those replies shrink the range right down to a single figure.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
