AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around Slyfield, like those in Burpham, run on two liquids; the engine gets only the diesel. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers. On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet. At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time. Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs. Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Burpham?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Burnet Avenue, or outside Anchor and Horseshoes on the way home after work.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Burpham or out in Merrow.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Jacobs Well or a forecourt around Burpham.

  • Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.
  • Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles show which goes in which filler just there.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside London Road (Guildford).

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever in Surrey the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

  • Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of New Inn Lane.
  • Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located your filler and read the cap.
  • The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there. Don't go on to step five.

Burpham: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor. On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of that tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the BP, the Sainsbury's or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Burpham.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run. The next junction means where to leave if you are on the M25, under 10 miles from Burpham. About how far did it go? Hopping across Burpham is less work than a trip of under 25 miles to Westminster, and so tell us.

Burpham: what takes place when our technicians get there

The van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, near Church of the Holy Spirit, or outside Burpham Primary School. Both the work and our price depend on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our engineers ask. You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system. Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. Hence it counts more. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed. We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark. Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Burpham and Surrey: AdBlue drains across the area

Burpham is a residential suburb, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, Bushy Hill and Abbotswood among them, across the GU postcode area. Quickest of all: give a GU4 7 postcode to our van.

Moving the vehicle isn't necessary. Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Kingpost Parade Village Sign, a lay-by on the way to Upfolds Green, a driveway. If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Burpham Village Hall, ring and ask instead of assuming.
