AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Busk? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and thoroughly purged where the car stands in Busk. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Busk, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

  • Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the electrics on.
  • If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting OL9 6, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Do not:

  • Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start your fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it is pointless.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Belmont Way.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself by the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Busk forecourt — the Tesco included — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it sits.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Chadderton last night and has not been started since. The liquid waits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be first through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage by morning for a car parked around Busk. Just inside your tank, it stays the same. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, and that is a separate kind of harm.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Asda, and the problem is thinned fuel. No harm is done while it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your vehicle sits in Cold Hurst or the centre of Busk, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

The same good news applies as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater Manchester your car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Busk

Many motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two can look the same. Nobody means it. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. The refill is rushed outside Burnley Brow Community School, after the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped in. After work, a container goes in on a drive near Brierley Street. Another pattern: darkness, the car park outside Clayton Green, and someone opening that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Keep it off: that's the first response to the same slip, anywhere in Busk or the rest of Greater Manchester you are.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Busk, and the motor started?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Perhaps returning from Berrisfield Park, or part way across Busk, the engine might go lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the Broadway, under a mile from Busk, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Busk to park beside Shahparan Chadderton Central Mosque and a drive of under 10 miles towards Manchester are such separate jobs. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where your car has stopped, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it's caught quickly.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Busk

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Busk: a side street near Sunnah Sanctuary, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The work rests on three answers, which we get first — which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

Then your tank is cleared where your car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue will not flush away unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than with petrol. The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step. Whether it is a parking space at Mills Hill or a driveway in Busk, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off. Before we leave, we confirm it's running smoothly with clean diesel in. Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop. Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Busk?

No flat figure could be honest, because every job is different. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Kick Sonic Indoor Football.

What got in, how much, and whether it ran: every Busk call opens by asking exactly that, before a figure, not after. Their answers shrink the range right down to one number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
