AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Caistor? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system draws it in. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly rinsed where your car stands around Caistor. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Caistor: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a LN7 6 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not:

  • Moving your car even a few yards is no reason to start your engine.
  • Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Even a short way down Chapel Street is too far to drive it.
  • Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Caistor forecourt — the the nearest petrol station included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake draws from. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Clixby last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of your tank, untouched — though it will be first through once the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage by morning for a vehicle parked in Caistor. Only inside that tank, it stays the same. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Nettleton Service Station, and this issue is diluted fuel. Mixed into the diesel and sitting still, it's harmless at that stage; running the engine is the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, because it splits again — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Caistor or out in Nettleton Top, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only in your tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever your vehicle has stopped across Lincolnshire.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Caistor: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A bottle bought while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways. The top-up gets hurried outside Caistor CofE and Methodist Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken off. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Coach House Court. Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Settlement, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up most in a rental, a new car, a fleet motor, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars people use least. Leave it off: that's the first step to the same slip, anywhere around Caistor or the rest of Lincolnshire you are.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Caistor?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then. The filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Maybe returning from Canada Wood, or part way across Caistor, the motor may go rough, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M180, under 10 miles from Caistor, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Caistor to the car park by Caistor Methodist Church is a very different job from a run towards Kingston upon Hull, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped. Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Caistor

A road beside Catholic Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever your vehicle has stopped in Caistor, our engineers come to it. Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run, since those answers settle this work.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Testing the vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where needed, swapped. Not run? Then count on about half an hour on site for most jobs. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the last step. At that point our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Barnetby or a driveway around Caistor. The test before our technicians head off is that it runs properly on new diesel. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Caistor: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single price, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Caistor Grammar School Library.

Ahead of a quote, never after, each enquiry from Caistor opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran. Given them, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
