Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Calcot

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm starts once it is pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. In Calcot, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Calcot: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so do not throw it away.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a RG31 7 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Don't do these:

  • Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.
  • Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Latimer Drive.
  • Emptying your tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

Moving your car off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Calcot forecourt you're on, the BP included. At home, the car remains just where it was left.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from. A car topped up on a drive in Horncastle yesterday evening and not started since counts as the simple case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though when the motor turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of that tank.

It does two kinds of harm from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it reaches for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning around Calcot leaves things worse. Inside your tank only, waiting does nothing. The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Sainsbury's. No harm comes as long as it stays put, blended into your diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Nor can it be watered down, since it separates back out — and the next fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying your engine "to see", in the centre of Calcot or out in Sheffield Bottom, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol. Wherever in Berkshire the car has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to empty.

Calcot: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of motors place the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two can appear identical. Nobody means it. Usually it's not the filling station: someone buys a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Calcot Junior School the top-up is hurried. After work, a container is tipped in on a driveway close to Porlock Place. Otherwise, in dim light by The Water Tower, your car gets topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company ones, and the spare car in a family with one of each fuels. Keep it off: that is the first response to the same mistake, wherever around Calcot or the remainder of Berkshire you are.

Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Calcot?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Given any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and pipework.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Holybrook Linear Park (West), say, or midway across Calcot. Once you safely can, stop then switch everything off — with no turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M4, under a mile from Calcot, by the next junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Mileage matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further in, so driving towards Oxford, under 25 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Calcot to the car park by Saint Birinus. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once your engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Permanent damage is very rare if it's spotted quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Calcot?

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street beside Turnhams Farm Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Calcot, and our van comes to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if the motor has run, because those answers determine this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when the tank is emptied, right there. The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Testing your vehicle follows last, after clean diesel goes in and the filter is cleaned or, where needed, replaced. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we turn up, provided your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, your system is bled with clean diesel. You drive off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Calcot or in a bay at Theale. The test before we leave is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Calcot: the cost of fixing it

No flat figure could be honest, since every job is different. Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open driveway is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind John Cumber Hall.

Ahead of a quote, not afterwards, each enquiry from Calcot begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and whether it ran. Those replies shrink a range right down to one number.
