Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Caldewgate

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The trouble begins once it's pulled through the lines — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Caldewgate. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Caldewgate

To do:

  • Keys out — then no one can power anything on.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the receipt, and we will see.
  • Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting CA2 5, or simply the name of a street nearby, so call from the car.

Don't:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: your motor stays off.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.
  • Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down John Roberts Gardens.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

The attendants working at any Caldewgate forecourt — the Sainsbury's among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a separate tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the gases. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its supply from. Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, which is why a car filled in Willow Holme last night and never switched on stays the straightforward one, provided no one touches your key.

Two kinds of damage come from there. What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow channels and block filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. A motor left standing in Caldewgate with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. The water in it causes damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Caldewgate

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the JET, and this problem is thinned fuel. No harm is done as long as it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether the car is in Morton or the heart of Caldewgate, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Cumbria your car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Caldewgate

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; many layouts invite it. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways. The refill is rushed outside Caldew Lea School, after your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were dropped off. Near Shaddongate, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening. Or a driver new to that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park outside Milbourne Arms.

Hired motors, new vehicles, company motors, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it the most. Wherever you are in Caldewgate or the rest of Cumbria, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave it off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Caldewgate?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then. It has been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across Caldewgate or returning from Saint James's Park. Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M6, under 3 miles from Caldewgate, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, so driving for Carlisle, under a mile away, gives a far larger job than crossing Caldewgate to the car park by Carlise Christian Fellowship. Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the motor has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped. Noticed early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Caldewgate: what it takes

A street beside Holy Trinity Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: anywhere the car has stopped around Caldewgate, our technicians travel to it. Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid got in, about the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then the tank is drained where your car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of your vehicle. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

The final step is to bleed your system on fresh diesel. Whether it is a parking bay outside Carlisle or a driveway in Caldewgate, that is where we fire it up and you set off. We check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a garage. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

Caldewgate and Cumbria: AdBlue drains across the area

No moving is needed. In Caldewgate, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is emptied where it stands, be it in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Caldewgate?

No single price would be fair, because each job is different. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open driveway is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight gap behind Cracker Packers.

Before a figure, not afterwards, each call from Caldewgate opens with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if the engine ran. When those are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. While our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
