AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Cambus: What Now?

Everything hinges on a single fact: if your engine has started since the AdBlue was added — more than anything else. Over in Throsk or right around Cambus, an unstarted engine must remain that way. Leave the engine and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103; it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Cambus. Where the motor has been run, stop somewhere safe straight away, then turn the vehicle off. The job is bigger, yet the first stage is the same.

Cambus forecourt: AdBlue in a diesel at the pump

Only at this point, nozzle yet in hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, right at the petrol pump. Somewhere around Cambus, then — Gulf, JET, or somewhere else close by.

The point: of every spot to find out, this is the best. Still in the tank, and no fuel pulled onwards: that is where the AdBlue sits.

Freeing the pump is no reason to run it — so do not get back in. Ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle into a parking bay, keep your receipt or the bottle, then call us from the forecourt. If it can't be shifted, it can be emptied at the petrol pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a working forecourt.

AdBlue in the diesel tank at home around Cambus

On the dash, a reminder had shown for days. Bought a bottle, tipped it in at home, binned the empty — and only then looked at the cap again, too late. It takes place on driveways just off Moubray Gardens as often as anywhere.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. Diesel and AdBlue stay apart: the AdBlue drops to the floor of that tank and stays there, however long it waits.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so no one moves your car in the morning. Then ring. In Canbus or right here in Cambus, the draining happens on your drive. Late-night clears beside a house are no problem: the pumps are quiet.

Cambus: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

Topped up, drove away, and soon the engine was turning roughly, blowing smoke, losing power, or flashing up your dash. Maybe driving for Stirling, under 5 miles away, or just down Main Street.

Put simply: the AdBlue has been pulled into your fuel system. Distance sets how deep it gets: filter and lines to begin with, then the injection pump and every injector. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Stop safely — that's the first step — then switch it off. Cambus sits under 5 miles from the M9; on it, pull off at the next junction rather than pushing on for the services. No trial starts: clearing itself is not something AdBlue will do. Roughly what distance had it gone? Tell us when you phone.

A hire or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank?

You have only had the car a week. Your own car either does without AdBlue or puts it somewhere different, and so nothing told you the AdBlue cap sits just next to your diesel. Any driver, wherever around Clackmannanshire, might make the same.

Meaning? Whatever applies above applies here — run or not — plus one further step. Many hire and company contracts want the owner to approve work on your car.

What to do: call the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is faster settled before our technicians turn up than after. If you are stranded in the car park outside Alloa, or by Lych Gate, whilst you wait for an answer, leave the vehicle off.

Unsure about AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cambus?

At times, "I think so" is the most anyone can truthfully say. Lighter, that bottle; a hint of ammonia round the filler; no clear recollection of the cap. Sound familiar? It might have been on a friend's drive in Branshill, or in a rush by the local primary school at the school run.

What it means: a little spilled around your filler does no damage to the engine. Inside your diesel tank, by contrast, AdBlue harms it. Firing up your car will not tell you which, and if there is AdBlue in the tank it would pull it in.

What to do: treat it as if it got in. Don't start it. Ring us and explain what you saw; we'd rather check a tank that turns out clean than drain one that has already been run.

The common ground in every Cambus AdBlue drain

Each situation gets the same opening to the work. Three questions are asked when we reach the car — on a forecourt, a driveway, a road beside Tullibody Civic Centre or the car park at The Inn At Cambus: the liquid, the quantity, and if the motor has been started. Your price comes over the phone, before a van leaves, and those replies set the work.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of unstarted vehicles are a half-hour job from the moment we turn up.

We fire it up at the end. Before our engineers head off, it's tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel. If it's caught quickly, the vehicle very seldom has permanent damage, and the entire job takes place where it is. Nothing is taken upfront, settlement is made on the day, and you receive what the insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Check your insurance while we're en route: cover for misfuelling is included in plenty of policies.
