AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Canning Town? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave the ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Canning Town, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has run. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

What to do straight away, Canning Town: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Say a E16 4 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the vehicle: your engine stays off.
  • The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.
  • No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it's pointless.
  • Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down Bidder Street.
  • Draining your tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

Moving the vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Canning Town forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. At your own drive, do not move it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor. Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases. Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel. Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very spot the intake sucks from. A car filled on a driveway in Trinity Buoy Wharf yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though when your engine runs, that is what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is flushed out. A motor left standing around Canning Town with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Texaco, and the problem is diluted fuel. No harm comes while it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only when your engine works on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid. It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through. Crystals and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" costs more here than nearly any other mistake — in Blackwall or the heart of Canning Town alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Wherever across Greater London your car has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Canning Town: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — can appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Luke's Primary School the top-up is hurried. After work, a container is tipped in on a drive close to Barking Road. One more version: darkness, the car park outside Husk Brewery & Taproom, and someone opening that flap for the first time.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever around Greater London, Canning Town as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

Canning Town: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Your filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may appear, maybe part way across Canning Town or coming back from Linear Park. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M11, under 5 miles from Canning Town, the next junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not driving on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system. That's why crossing Canning Town to park beside After The Dance and a drive of under 5 miles towards London are such separate jobs. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped. Noticed early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Canning Town

Our engineers come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Canning Town: a side street close to Fitness4Less, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Three answers decide the work, and so before anything else we ask which fluid went in, about what quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once. What remains from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, if your engine has not run. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the final step. Whether it's a parking bay at West Ham or a driveway around Canning Town, that is where our engineers start the car and you head off. Before we go, our technicians confirm it's running properly with new diesel in. The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop. Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Canning Town?

Every job is different, and so no single price would be fair. The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St. Margarets Catholic Church.

Before any figure, never afterwards, each call from Canning Town opens with the same three checks: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran. Given those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Before anyone sets off, you hear our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
