AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Carbrain, and What to Do Next

One fact matters most when AdBlue is in a diesel tank, and that is if your motor has been started afterwards. Wherever your vehicle stands — Kildrum, Carbrain — never run a motor that has not been started yet. Leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103; it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Carbrain. If it has run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off. The job is bigger, but the first step is the same.

At the pump around Carbrain: AdBlue in a diesel

Only now, bottle yet in your hand, it dawns on you that the cap you opened was the wrong one, right at the pump. Maybe you're at the Asda, possibly at the Tesco, possibly somewhere else around Carbrain.

In short: there is no better spot to be to spot it. The AdBlue is inside that tank and nowhere else. Nothing has pulled it in.

Freeing the petrol pump is no reason to start it — and so do not get back in. Three jobs: a shove into a bay with the attendants assisting, the receipt saved, and a call to us from where you stand. Our equipment is explosion-proof and safe on a busy forecourt, so a vehicle that can't be pushed clear is cleared right at the petrol pump.

At home in Carbrain with AdBlue in the diesel tank

For days the dashboard had been warning you. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the driveway, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look again at the cap. It takes place on driveways just off Yule Way as frequently as anywhere.

The point: zero miles since makes this nearly as good to finding it at the pump. At the floor of your tank sits exactly where AdBlue stays, because it won't blend with diesel — and a night going by changes nothing of the difference.

What to do: leave the keys inside the house so no one moves the vehicle in the morning. Then call. Cumbernauld or Carbrain: wherever your drive sits, that is where it gets emptied. Our pumping kit works quiet enough that it won't wake the street at night.

AdBlue drain on a forecourt in Carbrain

Set off with AdBlue in a diesel around Carbrain?

Rough running, smoke, lost power or a lit dashboard arrived a short way beyond the fill. Perhaps it was on Torbrex Road, possibly on the way out towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away.

Meaning? Your fuel pump has taken the AdBlue in. Past the fuel filter, through the lines, and — the more the mileage — deeper into the injection pump and every injector. It travels further with each extra mile driven and each restart.

Next: find a safe spot, stop, then switch your engine off. Service stations farther along can wait: from the M80, under a mile out of Carbrain, take the first junction. Starting it again to check achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear on its own. Roughly how far did it gone? Tell us as you call.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company motors

It is a motor you have had for a week. Your own motor either does without AdBlue or keeps it elsewhere, so no one told you the AdBlue cap sits just next to the diesel. Anywhere you are in North Lanarkshire, any driver could be caught.

What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it has run, with one more stage. Many rental and company agreements need the owner's approval before work.

Sorting it before we turn up is quicker, and so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, then us. Hanging on for an answer at the car park outside Cumbernauld, or beside Tryst Sports Centre? Leave the engine off throughout.

Carbrain: unsure if it was AdBlue in your diesel tank?

At times, "I think so" is all you can truthfully say. A slight ammonia-like whiff hangs around the filler, the bottle feels too light, and the cap you took off is hard to recall. Perhaps it happened in a hurry at the school gates at the local primary school, or on a friend's drive in Greenfaulds.

Put simply: spillage near the filler does the engine unharmed. In your diesel tank, however, AdBlue damages it. If there is AdBlue in the tank, starting the vehicle will suck it in, and it would not tell you which either.

Your move: act as if it did, and never start the motor. Inspecting a tank that turns out clean is better than draining one once it's been run — so phone and describe to us what you noticed.

Each AdBlue drain around Carbrain shares these steps

Whichever situation you are in, this job starts the same way. Our engineers come to your car, whether it's at a forecourt, a drive, the car park outside Burroughs Club or a side street close to The Link, and ask three things: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run. Those answers decide the work, and you hear the price by phone, before anybody heads out.

AdBlue crystallises and eats at certain metals used in fuel systems, so it won't wash out on its own; that's why the flush, after the drain, counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol. Then comes your filter — flushed, or replaced when necessary — followed by fresh diesel, and a test of the car. Most unrun cars are a half-hour job after the moment our engineers arrive.

Our engineers start the car last. Our technicians confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. The whole job is done where the car is, and if it's caught early, long-term damage is very unusual. Nothing is paid upfront, payment is made on the day, and you receive what the insurer wants: an engineer report plus a VAT invoice. Dig out your insurance before we're en route: cover for misfuelling is included in plenty of policies.
