Cardwell Bay: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble begins once it's pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Cardwell Bay. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

What to do straight away, Cardwell Bay: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we can know.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting PA19 1, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the car.

Not to do:

  • Moving the vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment the ignition goes on, so keep the vehicle off.
  • Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along Cove Road.
  • Draining the tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

At a forecourt in Cardwell Bay, whether it is the BP or another one, ask the staff to help you roll your car clear of the pump. At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. Stored in a separate tank, it's injected into the exhaust to treat the gases. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It does not combine. After it's poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It sinks, because it's denser than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its fuel from. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Coppermine last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny channels; and, since it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. A motor left sitting around Cardwell Bay with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Tesco, and the issue is diluted fuel. No harm comes while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. Not burning, it can't just be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, and so watering it won't help. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in North Auchneagh or the heart of Cardwell Bay equally.

As with petrol, there's good news. Wherever in Inverclyde the car has stopped, an unrun motor means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

Cardwell Bay: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it's not the forecourt: someone picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Sharp Street. Else, in dim light by Cardwell Inn, the car is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles people know the least. Leave it off: that is the first step to the same mistake, anywhere in Cardwell Bay or the rest of Inverclyde you happen to be.

Cardwell Bay: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank. The filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Battery Park or halfway across Cardwell Bay. Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M8, under 10 miles from Cardwell Bay, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

A quick hop across Cardwell Bay to the car park by Free French Memorial is one matter; driving towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it is caught soon.

What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Cardwell Bay

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a street beside Craigs Top, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Cardwell Bay, and our van comes to it. Three answers decide the work, so first our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't wash out by itself. Testing your car comes last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers arrive, provided the engine hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. You drive off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Cardwell Bay or in a bay outside Fort Matilda. It is tested on clean diesel to make sure it runs properly before our technicians head off. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Cardwell Bay?

There is no fair single quote, since the jobs are not the same. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Struthers Memorial Church.

Before a quote, not after, each call from Cardwell Bay opens with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether it ran. Their answers narrow the range down to one figure.

Priced on the call before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit. Check your insurance while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
