Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Carlton: Why It Happens
Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103. Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Carlton. The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading before it has happened.
AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank
Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Carlton and East Cowick carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.
Separate tanks, separate fillers. Other cars keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together under one flap. At the pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. Mistakes happen in that gap between them.
Carlton: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens
It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.
Haste follows from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Pinfold Lane, or on the way home in the car park at Foresters Arms.
New-to-you cars come second, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.
Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and once the pour begins, no part halts it. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Carlton or out in Camblesforth.
How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one
Be it a Carlton forecourt or a driveway out in Drax, take a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.
- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.
- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.
- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Snaith, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
For the day the warning comes on — wherever it is in North Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.
- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not rushed by Mill Lane at the roadside.
- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.
- Both under a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.
- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through its own spout.
- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.
Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there. Never go on to step five.
Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Carlton?
Don't start the motor: that is where the short order of things begins. Leave your ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels it alone runs the pump. Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.
At a forecourt — Carlton Service Station, Gulf or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask. At home in Carlton? Then the car stays put.
When your motor has been run already, pull over safely and switch the vehicle off. Carlton lies under 3 miles from the M62; there, take the first junction. Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Doncaster, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Carlton.
When our engineers arrive in Carlton, what occurs?
Wherever your car came to rest, whether by Carlton Primary School, beside Carlton War Memorial or on your own drive, the van comes to it. Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask. You get that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.
Draining the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol. The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle. Before leaving, our engineers start the car and confirm that it is running properly.
If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Carlton and North Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area
Snaith and West Cowick are among the towns around Carlton, a rural village, that the same vans cover, throughout DN postcodes. Quote a postcode beginning DN14 9, and the van arrives fastest.
There's no need to move the car. Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Saint Mary's Catholic Church, a lay-by on the way to Golden Gardens, a drive. If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of St Mary, ring and ask instead of assuming.
Carlton drivers: the short version
Before you tip, read the cap. AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep the car off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, across North Yorkshire.
