Carmel: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only comes when the pump begins pulling it. In Carmel, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Carmel: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So no one can switch the ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, and so do not throw it away.
  • Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting CH8 8, or just the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: your engine remains off.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.
  • Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Carmel Hill.
  • Beside the road, do not try emptying it on your own.

Moving the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Carmel forecourt you are on, the Texaco included. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of it was intended to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel. It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup draws its fuel from. The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Gorsedd last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's cleared out. Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning in Carmel leaves it worse. Inside the tank alone, waiting costs nothing. And there is the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Shell. Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Not burning, it cannot just be run through. Deposits and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue splits again from the diesel, and so watering it won't help. Hence the flush counts so much, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Holway or the centre of Carmel alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. Wherever in Flintshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Carmel?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. A container bought while driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical story.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car. Near Carmel Road, someone tips a bottle in on that drive after work. Or someone new to that flap tops up your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park outside Druid Inn.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Anywhere in Flintshire, Carmel included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

Carmel: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via your filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Maen Llwyd or halfway across Carmel. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M53, under 10 miles from Carmel, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Carmel to the car park by St. David's Church is a very different job from a run towards St Asaph, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. If it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Carmel?

Wherever it has come to rest around Carmel — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Eyton's Shaft Lead Mine — our van travels to the vehicle. Which fluid got in, roughly the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our engineers ask first, because those shape the job.

Then that tank is cleared where your car waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush counts much more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains will not wash away on its own. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested. Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes last. Whether it's a parking space outside Flint or a drive around Carmel, that is where our technicians start it and you drive off. Before we leave, our technicians confirm it's running correctly with new diesel in. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Carmel?

Every job differs, and so no single price is fair. What moves the cost is, first, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St. Paul's.

Before any figure, not after, every enquiry from Carmel opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the engine ran. When they are answered, a range becomes a single fixed figure.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
