Carmeltown: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system draws it in. In Carmeltown, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Carmeltown

Do these:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, pull the keys away.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call right where you are. Say a NP23 5 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Don't:

  • Shifting the vehicle just a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Even a short way along Reservoir Road is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • By the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

At a forecourt in Carmeltown, whether it is the Morrisons or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car away from the pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. From a separate reservoir it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the motor emits. A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't blend. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Beaufort Hill overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it would be first through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there. Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm overnight for a vehicle parked around Carmeltown. Just in that tank, it stays the same. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Carmeltown

Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Tesco, and this issue is thinned fuel. No damage comes while it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through. Whether your car sits in Rassau or the heart of Carmeltown, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

As with petrol, there's good news. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Blaenau Gwent your car is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Carmeltown?

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is rushed. Someone pours the container in at home, just off Church Crescent, as the day ends. Otherwise, in dim light by Cendl Inn, your vehicle gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet vehicle, or the spare motor in a home with both fuels — the vehicles drivers know least. Anywhere around Blaenau Gwent, Carmeltown as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

Carmeltown: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and any running time carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Eugene Cross Park, say, or midway across Carmeltown. Once safe, pull over then switch everything off — without turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M4, under 25 miles from Carmeltown, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why a hop across Carmeltown to park near St David's Church and a drive of under 25 miles towards Newport are very distinct jobs. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once the motor has run there is more of it. Lasting damage is very rare when it's noticed early.

What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves in Carmeltown

Anywhere it has stopped in Carmeltown — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street by Carmel Independent Chapel — our van travels to the car. What was put in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has turned over: we check before all else, since those decide the work.

Then that tank is cleared where the car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not wash out on its own. Clean diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. You head off as soon as our technicians have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Carmeltown or in a bay outside Ebbw Vale Town. It's checked on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before we go. Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Carmeltown: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no fair single price, since the jobs aren't the same. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, since an open drive is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind Bethel Methodist Church.

That is why each call from Carmeltown starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run. Their replies shrink a range right down to a single number.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. While the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.
