Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels around Bradshaw, as well as Castle Hill, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just your diesel. Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

There's a filler on each tank. Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side under one flap. The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes. Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

Castle Hill: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Woburn Avenue, or on the way home in the car park outside Bolton Castle.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. Whether it occurs in Firwood Fold or the middle of Castle Hill, it's the same few seconds.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Castle Hill

Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Bottom o th Moor or a forecourt in Castle Hill, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not its position.
  • Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.
  • Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Hall i' th' Wood? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever you are in Greater Manchester — a routine to use.

  • Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Firwood Lane at the roadside.
  • Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.
  • Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly using the own spout.
  • Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side. Skip stage five entirely.

AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Castle Hill?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins. On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on. Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Texaco, Shell or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car away if you ask. Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Castle Hill.

When your engine has run already, pull over safely and turn the vehicle off. The next exit means where to come off if you are on the St. Peter's Way, under 5 miles from Castle Hill. A short hop across Castle Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Salford, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

When we turn up around Castle Hill, what takes place?

Our van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Tonge Cricket Club, or outside Castle Hill Primary School. The answers settle this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run. You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

The system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is drained. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol. Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle. We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
