AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Central Parade? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor. AdBlue is urea mixed in water. The harm begins once it is sucked through the lines — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. In Central Parade, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Central Parade: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Give us a postcode starting E17 4, or whatever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so call from wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump going on many diesels. Skip it.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.
  • Even a short stretch down Hoe Street is too far to drive it.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Get the attendants to help you roll your car off the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Central Parade, whether it is the BP or somewhere else. At home, your car remains exactly where it was left.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the engine lets out. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup takes its fuel from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath your diesel, and that is how a vehicle topped up in Unity Place last night and never switched on stays the straightforward one, provided nobody turns your key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Central Parade leaves things worse. In the tank alone, time costs nothing. And there is the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that's the whole fault. No damage comes as long as it stays put, blended into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all. It can't just be run through, since it does not burn. Nor can it be thinned, because it splits back out — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Central Parade or out in Higham Hill, costs more than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Greater London the vehicle is standing.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Central Parade: how it ends up there

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. No one intends it; many designs allow it. A container picked up when driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the forecourt, is the typical route.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Emmanuel Community School the refill is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off High Street. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Goose.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the spare motor of a home with one of each fuel types. Keep it off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Central Parade or the rest of Greater London you happen to be.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Central Parade, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. The filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and some running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from William Morris Garden, say, or part way across Central Parade. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M11, under 3 miles from Central Parade, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Distance matters: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards London, under 10 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Central Parade to the car park by Forest Cinemas. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. If it is spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Central Parade: what it takes

A road by Soho Theatre Walthamstow, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your car has stopped around Central Parade, we come to it. What got in, about how much, plus if the motor has turned over: our technicians check before all else, because those shape the work.

Next, draining the tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue in one go. Residue from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters much more with urea than for petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested. If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive. Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel. Whether it's a parking space at Walthamstow Central or a drive around Central Parade, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off. Before leaving, our engineers confirm it's running correctly with clean diesel in. No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Central Parade: the cost of fixing it

Since the callouts vary, a flat figure would not be fair. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight space behind Walthamstow Central Library.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, plus whether the engine ran: every Central Parade call opens by asking precisely that, ahead of a quote, not after. Once they are answered, a range turns into one firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the quote by phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
