Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cherrytree Hill: Why It Happens

Keep your engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. A drain and a full flush, done just where your vehicle stands in Cherrytree Hill, is normally what it takes when caught before your engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads about Cherrytree Hill and Oakwood carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine. AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the fumes.

Every tank has a filler of its own. Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly. A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often. The error lives in that gap.

How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place in Cherrytree Hill

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Valley Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Royal Crown.

Unfamiliar cars are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Cherrytree Hill or out in Chaddesden.

Flushing a diesel fuel system after AdBlue, Cherrytree Hill

The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Wilmorton or a forecourt around Cherrytree Hill.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.
  • On many motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.
  • Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.
  • Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Spondon? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, wherever in Derbyshire, use this routine.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Paterson Avenue.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop. Don't carry on to step five.

Cherrytree Hill: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with no starting the engine. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off. Filling up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at Esso, Sainsbury's or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away when you ask. If you're on your own driveway in Cherrytree Hill, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run. The next junction means the place to leave when you're on the M1, under 10 miles from Cherrytree Hill. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Cherrytree Hill is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Derby, and so say.

Cherrytree Hill: what takes place when we arrive

The van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside The Philip Whitehead Memorial Library, or outside Cherry Tree Hill Primary School. Which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because those replies decide both work and quote. The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system. More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of that clears out on its own, however long it is left. A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or replaced if necessary. We don't go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers get there, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house. No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

AdBlue drains about Cherrytree Hill, and Derbyshire beyond

Cherrytree Hill is a neighbourhood, and our vans that cover it also work the places near it, Pride Park and Spondon among them, across the DE postcode area. Quickest of all: give a DE21 6 postcode to our van.

Moving the car isn't needed. A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Chaddesden Park, a side street close to St Mary's Parish Church: our technicians drain the vehicle where it stands. Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Chaddesden Hall Community Centre.
