AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chickerell? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep the engine off then leave your ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes once the pump begins pulling it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Chickerell, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has been run. Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

Chickerell, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

  • Pull the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.
  • The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting DT3 4, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Never do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the motor stays off.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so keep the car off.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not weaken it.
  • Leave the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along North Square.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

On a forecourt in Chickerell, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas. Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Charlestown overnight and hasn't turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in tiny passages and block filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's flushed out. Lines holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car sitting in Chickerell. Just inside your tank, it stays the same. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Chickerell

Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the BP. Damage only comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It doesn't burn, so it cannot just be run through. Whether your car sits in Coldharbour or the heart of Chickerell, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever across Dorset the car sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Chickerell: how it ends up there

Many vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody means it. Usually it's never the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Chickerell Primary Academy the top-up is hurried. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Lower Way. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Turk's Head, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, new motors, company cars, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it the most. Same slip, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you are in Chickerell or the remainder of Dorset.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Chickerell, and your engine started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank. With any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed via your filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, maybe midway across Chickerell or coming back from Chickerell Downs. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Chickerell lies under 50 miles from the M5; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards Wells, under 50 miles away, gives a much larger job than hopping across Chickerell to the car park by Chickerell Community Library. Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been running. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it's caught soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Chickerell?

The car stays where it is, whether that is a street near Prayer House, a drive, a layby or a forecourt in Chickerell, and our van comes to it. What got in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has turned over: we ask first, since those shape the job.

Then that tank is drained where your car stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than with petrol. A test of the car comes last, once fresh diesel is added and the filter gets cleaned or, where needed, swapped. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we arrive, if the motor hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with new diesel comes at the end. Whether it's a parking bay at Weymouth or a driveway in Chickerell, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off. We confirm it runs properly on new diesel before we leave. No workshop is needed at any stage, with the whole job done then and there. You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Chickerell

Every job differs, and so no fixed quote would be honest. What moves the price is, first, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind Chickerell Methodist Church.

What got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: every Chickerell enquiry begins with exactly those, before a figure, not afterwards. When those are answered, a range turns into one fixed figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Check your insurance whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.
