Chinley: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank. Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is. Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens until the engine sucks it round. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly purged where your car sits around Chinley. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Chinley

To do:

  • Take your keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so don't throw it away.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting SK23 6, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Don't:

  • Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch down Princes Road.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

At a forecourt around Chinley, whether it's the EG On the Move or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits beneath your diesel, and that is how a car filled in Bridgeholm Green last night and not started remains the simple one, provided no one touches your key.

It does two kinds of harm from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny channels; and, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there. Overnight, a car parked in Chinley with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just inside that tank, nothing changes. The water in it does harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Chinley

Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Morrisons and you have a problem of thin fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid. It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through. Crystals and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue splits again out of the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in New Smithy or the heart of Chinley equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever across Derbyshire your car has stopped.

Chinley: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver buys a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. Rushing, outside Chinley Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone tops up your car. Close to Green Lane, a driver pours a bottle in at home after work. Another version: dim light, the car park by Chinley Bar & Lounge, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar vehicles get it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare motor in a home with both fuels. Leave it off: that's the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Chinley or the rest of Derbyshire you are.

Chinley: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on the dash, or a cut-out — returning from Squirrel Green, perhaps, or part way across Chinley. Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M67, under 10 miles from Chinley, at the first junction and park safely, rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Chinley to the car park by WI Hall is a very different job from a run towards Manchester, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to flush once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the car has ended up. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage if it is spotted soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Chinley?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Chinley — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road beside St Marys, Chinley — our van comes to the vehicle. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if your engine has run, because those replies determine the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when the tank is drained, right there. A full flush matters far more after AdBlue than after petrol, because residue will not wash away on its own. A test of your vehicle comes last, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, where necessary, replaced. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run. Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, your system is primed with fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking space by the nearest station or a driveway in Chinley, that is where we start it and you drive off. The check before our engineers go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. Because the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

AdBlue drains across Chinley and Derbyshire

Throughout the SK postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue call-outs around Chinley reach much of Derbyshire as well, Whitehough, Leaden Knowl and Whitehough Head included. Close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.

No moving is needed. In Chinley, a village, a mobile service fits: the car is emptied on the spot, whether in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

Chinley: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job is different, and so not one single price would be honest. Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight gap behind Chinley Community Centre.

That is why each call from Chinley starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run. With them, a range shrinks to one firm number.

Our price is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
