AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chiseldon? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens till your motor sucks it through. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Chiseldon, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has run. Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Chiseldon

Do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Ring just where you are. Quote a SN4 0 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not:

  • Moving your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.
  • Even a short stretch up Turnball is too far to drive it.
  • Don't try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your car away from the island if you're at a forecourt around Chiseldon, whether it is the Esso or elsewhere. At home, the vehicle remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it. Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — entirely different from fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Badbury Wick last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue sits at the base of your tank, undrawn — though it will be first through if your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. Lines carrying AdBlue spell harm by morning for a vehicle parked around Chiseldon. Just inside that tank, it stays stable. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Chiseldon

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

A fault of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the BP. No damage comes as long as it stays unused, blended into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. Whether your car is in Draycot Foliat or the centre of Chiseldon, turning it over "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — wherever across Wiltshire the vehicle has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Chiseldon

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts invite it. It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

A couple of familiar ways account for the majority of them. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Chiseldon Primary & Nursery School. A driver pours the container in at home, right off Mays Lane, as the day ends. Otherwise, after dark outside The Patriots Arms, the vehicle is refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented cars, brand-new cars, company motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it most. Anywhere in Wiltshire, Chiseldon as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank in Chiseldon, and the motor started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. Via the filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it travels.

Perhaps coming back from Washpool, or part way across Chiseldon, the engine may go rough, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave it off instead of testing it again. More of that is pulled through with each start.

Leave the M4, under a mile from Chiseldon, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not driving on.

Distance matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading towards Oxford, under 50 miles away, makes a much larger job than hopping across Chiseldon to the car park by Holy Cross. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up. Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

Chiseldon: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road by Chiseldon Museum, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Chiseldon, our engineers travel to it. The job rests on three replies, and our technicians get before all else — what got in, the amount, and whether the motor has turned over.

Then the tank is drained where the vehicle sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because residue will not wash out unaided. The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, if your motor has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a busy filling station is no issue, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on clean diesel. You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Chiseldon or in a space at Swindon. Before we go, our engineers make sure it's running correctly with clean diesel in. As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers want.

Chiseldon and Wiltshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs around Chiseldon go to vans that cover the towns near it — Badbury, Hodson plus Medbourne — and most of Wiltshire beyond, across SN postcodes. Near a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

No moving is needed. In Chiseldon, a rural village, a van that comes to you fits: your car is drained where it stands, whether on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

Chiseldon: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single figure would be honest, since every job is different. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Brethren's Meeting Room.

Before any figure, never after, each call from Chiseldon opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran. The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Look at your policy while we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.
