AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Church Village? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water. It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system draws it in. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where the vehicle stands in Church Village. First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

Your next steps straight away, Church Village: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, which prevents anyone switching the power on.
  • Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and we can know.
  • Call right where you are. Quote a CF38 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition the car.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.
  • Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance up Station Road.
  • By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

Get the attendants to help you move your car off the island if you're on a forecourt in Church Village, whether it's the Esso or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave it just where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas. Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake draws its supply from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits underneath your diesel, and that is why a vehicle filled in Efail Isaf yesterday and not started remains the simple one, as long as no one turns the key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning around Church Village makes it worse. In that tank only, waiting does nothing. Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Church Village

Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one. Not burning, it can't just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Llantwit Fardre or the middle of Church Village.

The same good news holds as with petrol. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Rhondda Cynon Taf your car is standing.

How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Church Village?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under one flap — can appear the same. No one means it; many designs invite it. A bottle bought when driving home and tipped in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual story.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried. Near Lewis Street, someone pours a container in at home in the evening. Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside Fagins.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, new cars, company ones, and the spare motor of a home with one of each fuels. Anywhere across Rhondda Cynon Taf, Church Village as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

Church Village: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been drawn through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Maybe coming back from Station Road Play Area, or midway across Church Village, your engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall. No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then switch it off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M4, under 5 miles from Church Village, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why crossing Church Village to park near Canolfan Hamdden Llanilltud Faerdref and a drive of under 10 miles for Cardiff are such separate jobs. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up. Caught quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Church Village: what it takes

A street by Efail Isaf Village Hall, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Church Village, our engineers travel to it. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and if your engine has turned over: our engineers ask before all else, because those decide the work.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue together. Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Next, your filter: flushed, or changed when it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of the car. If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel. Whether it's a parking space by Trefforest Estate or a driveway in Church Village, that is where we fire it up and you drive off. We confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel before we go. We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Church Village

Each job differs, so no single quote is fair. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Capel Y Tabernacl.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: every Church Village call begins by asking exactly those, ahead of any quote, not after. Those replies shrink the range down to one figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told our price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance. Look at your policy whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
