AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Chyandour: Why It Happens and How to Avoid It
AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103. In Chyandour, finding it before the engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands. If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.
Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?
No single fluid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Chyandour and Treneere carry, with diesel feeding your motor. The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.
There is a filler on each tank. Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes. The mistake grows in that gap between them.
How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place in Chyandour?
Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.
On a drive off Gwel Lewern before work, or in the car park outside The Coldstreamer heading home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.
Unfamiliar vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new motors and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.
Nothing halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits. The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Chyandour or out in Gulval.
Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?
Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Chyandour or a drive out in Penzance. Seconds, no more.
- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.
- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.
- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.
- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.
- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Penzance's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.
AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank
Wherever in Cornwall the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.
- Not in a rush on the side of Eastern Green, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.
- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read the cap.
- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.
- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.
- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.
Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop. Don't go on to step five.
Chyandour: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?
The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine. Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump. Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.
On a forecourt — Tesco, Sainsbury's or another — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask. Your own drive around Chyandour is the place it should stay.
Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off. On the M5, over 50 miles from Chyandour, that means the next exit. Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Chyandour is smaller work than a run of under 25 miles towards Truro, and so say.
When we turn up around Chyandour, what takes place?
The van reaches the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Gulval Village Hall, or by Gulval School. Those replies determine the work and our price, and so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run. You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.
The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is emptied. AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol. Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle. We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.
If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

AdBlue drains across Cornwall, Chyandour included
Chyandour is a residential suburb, and our vans that cover it also work the places near it, Trythogga and Trevarrack among them, across the TR postcode area. Fastest of all: give a TR18 3 postcode to the van.
No need to shift the car. A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Princess May recreation ground, a side street near St Gulval: our engineers drain the vehicle where it sits. Guessing won't help behind Penzance Sailing Club, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to pin down; ring and check.

Read the cap before you pour. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Cornwall, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
