AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cinder Hill? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep your ignition off. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system draws it in. A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Cinder Hill, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your engine has run. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cinder Hill: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Put the hazards on if you are at all close to moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can see.
  • The van finds you quickest with a postcode starting WV14 9, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so call from the car.

Never do these:

  • Moving the car just a short way is no reason to start the motor.
  • Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • Adding more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.
  • Even a short stretch up Johnson Street is too far to drive the car.
  • Emptying your tank yourself by the road isn't one to try.

The staff on duty at any Cinder Hill filling station — the BP included — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask. On the drive, the vehicle remains exactly where it was left.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor. From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor emits. No part in an injection pump is made for this liquid — and no part of that was meant to go that way.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than blending — entirely different from fuel. It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its fuel from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, which is why a car filled in The Coppice last night and never started remains the straightforward case, provided no one turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage. It attacks certain metals used in fuel systems, attacking any part it touches till it's removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow passages. If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Cinder Hill leaves it worse. Inside your tank only, waiting does nothing. Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a fault of thin fuel. No harm comes while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only when your engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one. Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. Deposits and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, so thinning it won't work. Hence the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Ettingshall Park or the heart of Cinder Hill alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere around West Midlands the car sits.

Cinder Hill: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light. It mostly occurs at home, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways. Hurrying, outside Hill Avenue Academy, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills your car. A driver pours the bottle in at home, right off Beacon Street, as the day ends. Another version: dim light, the car park outside Horse & Jockey, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever you are around Cinder Hill or the remainder of West Midlands, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cinder Hill?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Black Country Millennium Forest or halfway across Cinder Hill. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M6, under 5 miles from Cinder Hill, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Cinder Hill to the car park by St Mary's is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the engine has been run there is more of it. Caught soon, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Cinder Hill?

Anywhere it has stopped in Cinder Hill — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road beside The Parish Church of The Most Holy Trinity Ettingshall — our van comes to the vehicle. The job rests on three replies, which we ask for first — what went in, the quantity, and whether your engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after that tank is emptied, on the spot. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through because residue will not flush out by itself. Testing the car comes at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter gets flushed or, if necessary, swapped. The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our engineers get there, provided the motor hasn't run. Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that is the last step. Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, at Coseley or on a driveway around Cinder Hill. We make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel before we go. The whole job is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Cinder Hill

Since each jobs vary, a single price would not be honest. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it depends on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind Beacon Hill Quarries.

Which fluid got in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Cinder Hill call begins by asking precisely those, ahead of a figure, never after. Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
