AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Claremount: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Keep the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank. A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where the vehicle stands in Claremount, is usually all it takes when found before the engine runs. If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — but many newer diesels seen round Claremount and Stump Cross hold another fluid too. Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank has a filler of its own. Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap. Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time. A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly. It's in the gap that the slip lives.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Claremount: how it happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Belgrave Avenue, perhaps outside The Old Post Office on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on. The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Claremount or out in Woodside.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, at a forecourt in Claremount or a driveway over in Boothtown. Seconds, no more.

  • Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.
  • On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.
  • The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook says which it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.
  • Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Halifax's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever around West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

  • Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Belgrave Gardens.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.
  • If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.
  • Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.
  • Close the cap, and look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That's where you stop. Step five is off limits.

Claremount: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine. The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off. Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Shell or somewhere else. Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Claremount.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run. On the M62, under 5 miles from Claremount, that means the next junction. Distance matters — a quick hop across Claremount makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles to Bradford — so tell us about how far it went.

Claremount: what happens when our technicians arrive

By St Joseph's Catholic Primary Academy, close to St Thomas The Apostle or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it. Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run, since those answers settle the work and our quote. You hear that price on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system. More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes away unaided, no matter how long it sits. Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary. Next our engineers start it and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark. Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice. It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

The car does not need to shift. A drive, a lay-by on the way to Duffy's Park, a side street near North Bridge Leisure Centre: our technicians drain the car where it is. Tricky to explain, like the back of Maurice Jagger Centre? Close to a county line? Checking beats assuming, so ring.
