Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads about Clementhorpe and Foss Islands carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor. AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler. Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side behind one flap. Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again. Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly. The slip lives in that gap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Clementhorpe: how it occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Bishopthorpe Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Swan.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, carries on. Whether it takes place in South Bank or the middle of Clementhorpe, it's the same few seconds.

How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Layerthorpe or a forecourt around Clementhorpe, check these. They take a few seconds.

  • The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles show what belongs in which inlet just there.
  • Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says which.
  • Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at York.

How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across North Yorkshire that is.

  • Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Scarcroft Road.
  • Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.
  • Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.
  • Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.
  • Close the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel filler remained shut throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there. Stage five is out.

Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Clementhorpe already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine. On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on. AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Morrisons or the BP, ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the petrol pump. At home around Clementhorpe? Then the vehicle remains put.

Already started? Pull over once it's sensible, then turn off. Clementhorpe lies under 15 miles from the A1(M); on it, use the first junction. A short hop across Clementhorpe is a smaller job than a run towards York, under a mile away, so tell us about how far it went.

Our arrival in Clementhorpe, and what takes place next

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it by Scarcroft Primary School, beside Conversation Piece or at home, the van travels to it. Which liquid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide the work and price. No one heads out until you've had the quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is emptied. With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own. The filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle. We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark. Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
