Clifton: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation
What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: whether your engine has run since it got in. Over in Glen Dowlin or right in Clifton, an unrun engine must stay that way. Leave the engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103; it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Clifton. Already started? Pull over once you safely can, then switch everything off. It is a larger job, yet stage one doesn't change.
Wherever around Cumbria it took place, one of the cases below fits yours.
On a Clifton forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel
You're at the pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Anywhere in Clifton, then — Esso, another forecourt nearby, or somewhere else close by.
What it means: this is the ideal location to find out. The AdBlue is inside the tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.
Do this: keep out of the driver's seat, even if the queue needs freeing. Have the staff to help rolling it to a bay, save the receipt, then phone us from there. Draining it right at the petrol pump is fine when it can't be shifted, since the equipment is explosion-proof.
AdBlue in the diesel tank on a Clifton drive?
For days the dashboard had been nagging you. A bottle bought at the garage, emptied in on the driveway — and it's just at the bin that the cap caught your eye. Drives near Fairview Gardens get it as much as anywhere.
Meaning? As long as your vehicle hasn't been driven since, it's close to the pump case. On the bottom of your tank sits where AdBlue waits, because it will not mix with diesel — and a night going by makes nothing of the difference.
Keep your keys indoors overnight — otherwise someone may take it away at breakfast — and call us. Our technicians drain the car on your driveway, whether that is in Clifton or out in Clifton Dykes. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.
Set off with AdBlue in a diesel around Clifton?
You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the motor began to run unevenly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Crooklands View, perhaps, or the route towards Carlisle — a trip of under 25 miles.
In short: the AdBlue has been pulled through your fuel system. Past the filter, along the pipework, and — the more the distance — deeper into the injection pump and each injector. Every restart, like each mile, pushes it deeper.
Next: find a sensible spot, pull in, and turn your motor off. Service stations further along can wait: on the M6, under a mile out of Clifton, use the first junction. Starting it again to test achieves nothing — AdBlue never clears on its own. Roughly how far had it go? Tell us as you phone.
Hire, lease or company car with AdBlue in the wrong tank
You've had this vehicle hardly a week. Unbeknown to you, the AdBlue and diesel inlets sit side by side here — unlike your own car, which has no AdBlue or stores it elsewhere. Anyone, wherever in Cumbria, could make it.
Meaning? Whatever case above applies here — run or unrun — and one further stage. Plenty of hire and company agreements want the owner to approve work on the car.
Settling it before the van arrives is faster, so phone the hire company or your fleet manager, and then us. Waiting for an answer in the car park at Penrith, or beside Clifton Village Hall? Keep the engine off meanwhile.
AdBlue in the diesel tank? Not sure, around Clifton
Truthfully, the only answer may be that you think so. What cap was taken off, you cannot say; but the bottle weighs less than it ought to, and a whiff of ammonia hangs by your filler. Maybe on a friend's drive in Yanwath, or in a rush outside Clifton Primary School on the school run.
The upshot: your engine is not harmed by some AdBlue spilled on the outside. AdBlue inside your diesel tank does. You can't tell which by turning the ignition, and doing so would pull in any AdBlue that is in your tank.
Next: assume it got in, then keep your motor off. Describe what you saw on the phone. A clear tank checked counts as a happier outcome than an already-run one drained.
Clifton: what each AdBlue drain has in common
Every situation gets the same opening to the job. Filling station, drive, George and Dragon's car park or a road beside Clifton Moor Skirmish 1745 — the van comes to your car, and three questions follow: what liquid, which amount, and whether it has run. Those replies determine this work, and you get our price by phone, before anybody heads out.
Then the tank is cleared and your system rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't rinse out on its own. Then comes the fuel filter — flushed, or replaced where necessary — then fresh diesel, and a test of the vehicle. Where the motor has not been started, allow roughly half an hour once we arrive, in most jobs.
Last, our engineers start the car. Our technicians check it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we go. Our technicians do the whole job where the car is, and lasting damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted soon. You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer. Dig out your insurance while we're en route: cover for misfuelling is included in many policies.
