AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Clydach? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep the ignition off. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water. The trouble starts once it's pulled through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel. If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully rinsed where the car sits in Clydach. Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Clydach, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • Pocket the keys, which stops anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting NP7 0, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you straight — so call from wherever you are.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your engine stays off.
  • Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.
  • Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance up Dan Y Coex.
  • Emptying the tank yourself beside the road is not worth trying.

The staff on duty at any Clydach filling station — the Gulf included — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask. At your own driveway, don't touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor. Kept in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the fumes. Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in. It sinks, since it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its supply from. The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Maesygwartha last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside. If the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning in Clydach makes it worse. In that tank only, waiting does nothing. And there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that need it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more significant than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Texaco, and this issue is thinned fuel. No damage is done as long as it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your car is in Gellifelen or the heart of Clydach, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Monmouthshire your car is standing.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Clydach

Many motors place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally under a single flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody means it. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school. A driver pours the container in at home, right off Haulfryn, as the day ends. Or the car is topped up in the car park at Cambrian Inn, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a fleet car, or the spare motor in a family with both fuels — the cars drivers know least. Wherever around Monmouthshire, Clydach as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it off.

Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Clydach?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It's been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Coed Pen-y-wern, say, or part way across Clydach. Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than testing it again. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M4, under 25 miles from Clydach, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance matters: every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, so heading for Newport, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Clydach to the car park by Old Ironworks. Let us know about how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the engine has run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Noticed soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Clydach?

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Clydach: a side street close to Llanelly Hill Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Before anything else our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run, since those answers settle the work.

Then that tank is cleared where the car sits, so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step. At that point our technicians start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Ebbw Vale Town or a driveway in Clydach. It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers go. The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Clydach?

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Three things move the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Bugail Unig/Lonely Shepard.

With that reason, each call from Clydach begins with the identical trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, if it ran — before a figure. Given those replies, a range shrinks to one fixed figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear the price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
