AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Coed Eva? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in. If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits in Coed Eva. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Coed Eva: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NP44 4, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

  • Not even for a second, and not to shift the vehicle: your motor remains off.
  • Don't switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.
  • AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not weaken it.
  • Even a short distance down Meyricks is too far to drive it.
  • Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

On a forecourt around Coed Eva, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll your car clear of the petrol pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases. Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in St Dials overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there. What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's flushed out. A motor left standing around Coed Eva with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Coed Eva

Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Sainsbury's, and the issue is thinned fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left inside the tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether. It does not burn, so it cannot just be run through. It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Two Locks or the middle of Coed Eva.

The good news is the same as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Torfaen the car is sitting.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Coed Eva

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car. Someone tips the bottle in outside their house, right off Cwrt Penylan, as the day ends. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Blinkin Owl.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles get it most. Same slip, same first response — keep it switched off — anywhere you happen to be around Coed Eva or the rest of Torfaen.

Coed Eva: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. Through your filter, through the lines, and — given any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that's where it travels.

Maybe returning from Henllys Local Nature Reserve, or midway across Coed Eva, your engine might run rough, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or cut out. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the M4, under 5 miles from Coed Eva, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than carrying on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue further in, so heading for Newport, under 5 miles away, gives a far larger job than crossing Coed Eva to the car park by Coed Eva & Hollybush Community Centre. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once your engine has been run there is more of it. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it is noticed soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Coed Eva?

Wherever it has come to rest in Coed Eva — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Glen Llywd Scouts — the van comes to your car. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has turned over: our technicians check first, since those shape the work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains will not flush away unaided. Testing your vehicle comes at the end, after clean diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, where needed, replaced. If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there. Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step. You drive off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Coed Eva or in a space by Cwmbran. We confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel before we leave. Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it. At the end, you are given paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Coed Eva: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts differ, a single price would not be fair. What shifts the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Fairwater Leisure Centre.

What got in, what quantity, and whether it ran: each Coed Eva call begins by asking exactly that, before a quote, never afterwards. Their replies narrow a range down to one number.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for that day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
