Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Collingham and Raby Park carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor. Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, separate fillers. Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead. The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time. The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes. That gap is where the slip lives.

How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Collingham?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Compton Road, perhaps at Cromwell's on the way home that evening.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started. Linton or the heart of Collingham: it takes the same few seconds either way.

Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Collingham or a driveway over in East Keswick. Seconds, no more.

  • Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.
  • The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.
  • Look inside your fuel flap: many cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.
  • The handbook shows where it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.
  • The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Pannal, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across West Yorkshire that is.

  • Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Harewood Road.
  • Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.
  • The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.
  • Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.
  • Shut the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side. Step five is out.

Collingham: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor remains off. The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off. Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at Shell, Morrisons or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car clear when asked. If you are on your own driveway in Collingham, leave it where it stands.

When the motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch the car off. Leave the A1(M) — under 3 miles out of Collingham — at the first junction. Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Collingham is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles towards Leeds, and so say.

When we get there around Collingham, what happens?

The van comes to the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Collingham Memorial Hall, or outside Collingham Lady Elizabeth Hastings Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School. What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those replies decide the work and price. The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is drained. Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. Hence it counts more. A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed. Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it is running properly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark. Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice. Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
