Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Congleton

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off and keep the ignition off. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. The trouble starts once it is pulled through the pump — it won't ignite, and it will not combine with diesel. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully cleaned where your car stands in Congleton. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Congleton, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • So nobody can switch your ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.
  • So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Tell us a postcode starting CW12 1, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.
  • The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.
  • Pouring in extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.
  • Even a short stretch down Market Square is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

Moving the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Congleton forecourt you're on, the UK Petroleum included. On the drive, your car remains just as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine. Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. A motor filled on a drive in Bath Vale yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward case. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on any part it reaches until it is cleared completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages. A car left sitting in Congleton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Shell, and the issue is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is in that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn. It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Astbury Marsh or the middle of Congleton.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Anywhere around Cheshire the car has stopped, an unstarted engine means the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Congleton

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it's not the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Daven Primary School the top-up is rushed. Near Canal Street, a driver pours a container in on that drive in the evening. Or someone unfamiliar with that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park outside Ye Olde White Lion.

It happens most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Wherever across Cheshire, Congleton as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first response: keep it off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Congleton?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. It has been pulled through the filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from Congleton Bath House & Physic Garden, say, or midway across Congleton. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check. More of it is pulled through with each start.

Leave the Sandbach Services Southbound, under 10 miles from Congleton, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That is why a hop across Congleton to park near John Bradshaw and a drive of under 10 miles for Stoke-on-Trent are such different jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the engine has been started, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up. If it's noticed early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Congleton: what it takes

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Congleton: a side street near Congleton Town Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. The job depends on three answers, which our technicians ask for first — which fluid went in, the amount, and whether your engine has turned over.

Next, emptying that tank on the spot removes the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go. The fuel system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then your car is tested. If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive. Explosion-proof pumps make a live forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Lastly, the fuel system is bled with new diesel. You drive off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Congleton or in a bay outside the nearest station. The check before our technicians leave is that it runs properly on fresh diesel. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop. The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Congleton: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single price, since the jobs are not the same. Three things move the cost: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind The Rotary Club of Congleton.

Which fluid got in, what quantity, and whether the engine ran: every Congleton enquiry begins with exactly those, before any quote, never afterwards. When those are known, a range turns into one firm number.
