AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Cookridge? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition too. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. The harm begins once it is sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Cookridge. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cookridge: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So nobody can turn your ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Put your hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.
  • So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Ring right where you are. Quote a LS16 7 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Don't:

  • Shifting your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start your motor.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant the ignition comes on, so leave the vehicle off.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is pointless.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Cookridge Grove.
  • No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you move your car away from the pumps if you are on a forecourt around Cookridge, whether it is the BP or somewhere else. If you're on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to treat the gases. A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel. The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Low Farm last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through if your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and tiny passages; and, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there. If the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight in Cookridge leaves things worse. In that tank only, time does nothing. Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Esso, and the problem is diluted fuel. It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in your tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one. It can't simply be run through, because it doesn't burn. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Ireland Wood or the middle of Cookridge.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere around West Yorkshire the car has stopped.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Cookridge

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars waits right next to your diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside Cookridge Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Mavis Lane. Another version: dim light, the car park by Old Modernians Association, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new vehicle, a fleet vehicle, or the spare car in a home with both fuels — the cars people know the least. Same mistake, an identical first step — leave it switched off — wherever you happen to be in Cookridge or the rest of West Yorkshire.

Cookridge: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. Via the filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Maybe returning from Cookridge Hall Golf Course, or midway across Cookridge, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or stall. Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than testing it again. Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the Inner Ring Road, under 5 miles from Cookridge, by the first junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Cookridge to park beside Cookridge Methodist Church and a drive of under 10 miles towards Leeds are such distinct jobs. Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop. If it is noticed soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Cookridge?

Wherever it has come to rest around Cookridge — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Cookridge Village Hall — the van comes to the vehicle. Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if the motor has run, since those replies decide this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together after your tank is emptied, right there. A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not clear out on its own. Testing your vehicle comes last, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, replaced. Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Lastly, the system is bled with fresh diesel. At that point our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay by Horsforth or a driveway around Cookridge. The test before our engineers go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel. No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot. You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Cookridge: the cost of fixing it

No single price would be fair, because each job is different. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Holy Trinity Cookridge.

That's why each call from Cookridge starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. Those answers shrink a range right down to a single number.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
