AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Cooksland? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is where you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank. Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and nothing happens till your engine pulls it through. Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Cooksland. Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cooksland: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • So no one can turn the ignition on, take the keys out.
  • If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazards on.
  • So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save your receipt or the empty bottle.
  • Give us a postcode starting PL31 2, or whatever street is nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

  • No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.
  • Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's wasted.
  • Even a short stretch down Cooksland Lane is too far to drive the car.
  • Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

At a forecourt in Cooksland, whether it's the Asda or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump. At home, the vehicle remains exactly where it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go. Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes. A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Carminow Cross yesterday and not switched on stays the simple case, provided nobody touches the key.

Once it is pulled in, the harm comes in two forms. What is left when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out. Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a vehicle parked in Cooksland. Only in that tank, it stays stable. The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Cooksland

Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt makes the fuel thin — that is the main problem. Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it is harmless for now; running your engine is the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Whether your car is in Bodiniel or the heart of Cooksland, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other error, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the next tankful.

As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever across Cornwall the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet in the reservoir: the easiest part of a fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Cooksland

Many motors put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two may look the same. Nobody intends it. Usually it's never the filling station: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. The top-up is hurried outside St Petroc's Church of England Voluntary Aided Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were taken in. Close to Old Callywith Road, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive after work. Another version: dim light, a pub car park by The White Hart Inn, and a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels. Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, anywhere in Cooksland or the remainder of Cornwall you happen to be.

Cooksland: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside your tank. Through the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Maybe coming back from Priory Park, or part way across Cooksland, the engine may run rough, smoke, lose power, flash the dash or stall. Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M5, over 50 miles from Cooksland, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Cooksland to the car park by Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses is a very different job from a run towards Truro, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has ended up, and once your engine has run there is more of it. Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it is noticed soon.

Cooksland: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around Cooksland — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street by Bodmin Magistrates Court — the van travels to your vehicle. The work rests on three replies, and we get first — what got in, the amount, and whether your motor has run.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once. What remains from AdBlue won't wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more here than with petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the system with fresh diesel comes last. You drive off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Cooksland or in a bay by Bodmin Parkway. Before we go, we check it's running correctly with new diesel in. Because the job is done in full where your car is, a workshop never comes into it. Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Cooksland

Since each jobs differ, a single price wouldn't be fair. The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Discovering42.

Before any figure, not afterwards, every call from Cooksland opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran. Those answers shrink a range right down to one number.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
