Coven: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor blends, and no harm happens until the engine pulls it round. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Coven, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has run. Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

Coven, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do these:

  • Pocket your keys, and that stops someone switching the power on.
  • Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.
  • Which fluid, and roughly how much amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will know.
  • Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting WV9 5, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Shifting the car just a short way is no reason to start the engine.
  • Plenty of diesels power their pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave it off.
  • Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.
  • Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch down Brewood Road.
  • No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

On a forecourt around Coven, whether it is the Esso or another one, ask the staff to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what your motor lets out. Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to go that way.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — entirely different from fuel. It sinks, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from. Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it waits underneath your diesel, which is why a vehicle filled in Coven Lawn yesterday and never switched on stays the simple case, as long as nobody turns your key.

It does two kinds of damage from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out. By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Coven with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it's only in your tank, nothing changes. The water in it causes harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the main issue. Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and sitting in your tank, it does none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid. It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn. Whether the car sits in Brinsford or the heart of Coven, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news. If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Staffordshire the car is standing.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Coven: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle grabbed en route home, rather than at the filling station.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar. Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Paul's CofE First School the refill is hurried. Close to New Homage Gardens, someone tips a bottle in on the drive after work. Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Rainbow, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare car of a family with one of each fuel types. Anywhere across Staffordshire, Coven as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

Coven: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank. Via the filter, along the lines, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Perhaps coming back from The Bront, or midway across Coven, your engine may run rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or stall. No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then switch everything off. Each start pulls more of it through.

Coven sits under 3 miles from the M54; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Coven to the car park by St Pauls is a very different job from a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been running. Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted early.

Coven: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car stays where it is, whether that is a road beside Coven Memorial Hall, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Coven, and the van travels to it. Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if your motor has run, since those answers settle the work.

Then your tank is cleared where your car sits, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last. At that point our engineers start the car and you set off, whether from a parking space by Bilbrook or a drive in Coven. Before leaving, our engineers confirm it's running properly with fresh diesel in. The whole job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

AdBlue drains across Staffordshire, Coven included

AdBlue call-outs around Coven go to vans that serve the places near it — Cross Green, Standeford as well as Slade Heath — and much of Staffordshire further out, across WV postcodes. Ring and check rather than guess when you're by a border, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Coven, a village, a mobile service fits: the car is emptied where it stands, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Coven: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs differ, a single figure wouldn't be fair. Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind St. James Church.

Which fluid was put in, what quantity, and whether it ran: each Coven call begins with precisely that, before any quote, not after. Once those are known, a range turns into a single fixed figure.

Our quote is given on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
