Cox Green: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your engine. Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue. Being water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump starts drawing it. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Cox Green, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has been run. Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

Cox Green, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

  • So nobody can turn the ignition on, take your keys out.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting SL6 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: the motor stays off.
  • Many diesels power their pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so keep the vehicle off.
  • Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.
  • Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way down Mercia Road.
  • No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Moving the car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Cox Green forecourt you're on, the Esso or any other. At home, your car stays just as it is.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it. No part inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was intended to go that way.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of mixing — quite unlike fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Highway last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it would be first through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside. Where the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning around Cox Green leaves it worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing. And there is the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Cox Green

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error over at the BP, and the problem is diluted fuel. Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in the tank, it does none.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid. It cannot just be run through, because it doesn't burn. Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the following fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Cox Green or out in Woodlands Park, costs more than almost any other error.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside the tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to clear, anywhere the car has stopped across Berkshire.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Cox Green

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — may look the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts allow it. Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

A few familiar ways cover most cases. Rushing, outside Wessex Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the car. After work, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Stratford Gardens. Otherwise, after dark by The Barley Mow, the car gets refilled by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new ones, fleet cars, and the spare car of a home with one of each fuel types. Same slip, an identical first step — keep it off — wherever you are in Cox Green or the rest of Berkshire.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Cox Green, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then. It's been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Perhaps returning from Desborough Park, or midway across Cox Green, the engine may go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check. Each start pulls more of that through.

On the A404(M), under a mile from Cox Green, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Hopping across Cox Green to the car park by Cox Green Library is one thing; heading towards St Albans, under 25 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop. Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is noticed soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Cox Green?

Anywhere it has come to rest in Cox Green — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Norden Farm Centre for the Arts — our van comes to the vehicle. The work depends on three replies, and our engineers get before all else — which fluid got in, the amount, and if your motor has run.

Then that tank is emptied where your car stands, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. What remains from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol. Clean diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested. Not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Last, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel. At that point we start it and you drive off, whether from a parking bay outside Maidenhead or a drive in Cox Green. Before we leave, our technicians make sure it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in. As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Anywhere the car sits — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Cox Green, a residential suburb, well.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Cox Green?

No single figure would be fair, since every job differs. The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Altwood Centre.

For that in mind, each enquiry from Cox Green opens by asking the identical trio — what was put in, how much, whether it ran — before any figure. Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, it is paid for that day — card or phone, no deposit. Look at your policy while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
