Crackenedge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Find Your Situation

What to do about AdBlue in a diesel tank depends on one thing more than any other: whether the engine has run since it was put in. Over in The Flatts or right around Crackenedge, an unrun motor must stay that way. Leave your engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103; it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Crackenedge. If it has run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off. It is a larger job, though step one doesn't change.

Wherever in West Yorkshire it happened, one of the cases below matches yours.

On a Crackenedge forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

Just at this point, bottle still in your hand, you realise that the cap you opened was the wrong one, there at the petrol pump. It could be the Shell, or perhaps the Asda, or a different forecourt around Crackenedge.

What it means: this is the ideal place to find out. The AdBlue is in that tank and nowhere else. Nothing has sucked it in.

Freeing the pump is no reason to start it — so do not get back in. Ask the attendants to help you roll the car into a parking spot, keep the till receipt or the bottle, and call us from the forecourt. If it can't be shifted, it can be emptied at the pump: the equipment is explosion-proof and fine on a working forecourt.

At home around Crackenedge with AdBlue in the diesel tank

For days the dash had been warning you. Only at the recycling bin, the empty container in hand, did you glance back at the cap you had used at the drive. It occurs on driveways just off Crackenedge Lane as often as anywhere.

Meaning? Provided your vehicle hasn't been driven since, it is close to the pump case. Diesel and AdBlue keep apart: the AdBlue drops to the floor of the tank and remains put, however long it waits.

What to do: leave your keys inside the house so no one moves the vehicle in the morning. Then ring. We drain the car on your drive, whether that is in Crackenedge or out in Eastborough. Even at night, the pumps stay quiet enough for a driveway.

AdBlue in a diesel and already driving around Crackenedge?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later the engine began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. Stonehyrst Avenue, say, or the route towards Wakefield — a run of under 10 miles.

What it means: the fuel system has sucked the AdBlue in. The injection pump and each injector get it as well on a bigger trip, after your filter and lines have it. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Your move: pull up anywhere sensible, then switch the motor off. Crackenedge sits under 3 miles from the M62; there, come off at the first junction instead of pushing on for the services. No trial starts: clearing itself isn't something AdBlue will do. Tell us know the mileage covered when you ring.

AdBlue in the wrong tank of a hire, lease or company car

Seven days back, it was unknown to you. The AdBlue filler is right beside the diesel filler, which you did not know, because your own car either has no AdBlue or keeps it somewhere else. Anywhere you happen to be in West Yorkshire, every driver could be caught.

The upshot: exactly as above, split by if it ran, but with an added step. The owner often has to approve the work, under plenty of hire and fleet agreements.

Settling it before the van turn up is faster, so ring the hire company or your fleet manager, then us. Waiting for an answer in the car park outside Dewsbury, or near Artspace Studio Theatre? Keep the engine off meanwhile.

Not sure it was AdBlue in the diesel tank, Crackenedge?

At times the fair answer is "I think so". Too light, that bottle; a hint of ammonia round the filler; no clear memory of which cap. Look familiar? A rushed top-up by the gates of Eastborough Academy, or a call to a friend in Hanging Heaton: both fit.

What it means: a little spilled around your filler does no damage to the motor. Once it's inside your diesel tank, though, it does. Any AdBlue in your tank will be pulled in by turning on your car, and the start would not settle which it is in any case.

What to do: treat it as if it got in. Don't crank it. Inspecting a tank that turns out clean beats emptying one once it's been run — so ring then tell us what you saw.

Each AdBlue drain around Crackenedge shares these steps

Whichever scenario you are in, this job starts the same way. Wherever your car is — Crackenedge Hotel's car park, a road by Masjid Salahuddin, a drive, a filling station — the van gets there and asks about the liquid, the quantity, plus if your engine has turned over. The price is given over the phone, ahead of anyone setting off, and those answers shape the work.

Then that tank is cleared and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not rinse out on its own. Then is the filter — cleaned, or swapped where needed — followed by clean diesel, and a test of your vehicle. Where the engine hasn't run, expect roughly half an hour on site, for most cases.

Firing it up comes last. Our technicians check it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave. The whole job is done where the car is, and if it's caught early, lasting damage is very rare. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, nothing upfront. Worth knowing: many insurers offer misfuelling cover, and so a check of your documents as we travel pays.
