AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Crewton, and What to Do Next

All of it turns on a single fact: whether the engine has started after the AdBlue went in — far more than anything else. Over in Osmaston or here around Crewton, an unstarted motor must remain unrun. Phone 0333 366 0103 with your key and motor both off. Across Crewton, such a case is generally drained and flushed where it stands. Already started? Stop once you safely can, then turn everything off. Step one remains the same, even if the work grows.

Below: the cases we see, wherever around Derbyshire. Choose the one that fits.

On a Crewton forecourt with AdBlue in a diesel

You are at the petrol pump, the nozzle or the bottle still in your hand, and you have just noticed the cap you opened was the wrong one. Anywhere around Crewton, then — Esso, Gulf, or somewhere else close by.

What it means: this is the best spot to find out. Still inside your tank, and no fuel pulled onwards: that is where the AdBlue is.

What to do: don't get back in and start the car to clear the pump. Three things: a shove into a space with the attendants helping, the bottle kept, and a call to us from the forecourt. Draining it there at the pump is possible if it can't be moved, because the equipment is explosion-proof.

At home in Crewton with AdBlue in the diesel tank

The warning light had been on for days. You bought a bottle, poured it in on the drive, and only when you put the empty bottle in the recycling did you look once more at the cap. Drives close to Wisgreaves Road get it as much as anywhere.

What it means: if you have not driven since, this is nearly as good as the forecourt. Diesel and AdBlue keep separate: the AdBlue drops to the floor of that tank and remains put, no matter how long it waits.

Keep your keys in the house overnight — otherwise someone might take it away at breakfast — then call us. Wilmorton or Crewton: wherever your driveway is, that is where it is drained. The pumps are quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Crewton: drove off with AdBlue in a diesel?

You filled up, set off, and a mile or two later your engine began to run roughly, smoke, lose power or light up the dashboard. It might have been heading for Derby, under 3 miles away, or just down Wynton Avenue.

Meaning? Your pump has taken the AdBlue up. It has been through the filter and your lines and, the further you went, into your high-pressure pump and your injectors. Each mile and each restart takes it further.

Do this: stop anywhere safe, then switch your engine off. Service stations farther on are too far: from the M1, under 10 miles out of Crewton, use the first junction. Restarting it to check achieves nothing — AdBlue doesn't clear on its own. Phone, saying what distance your vehicle went.

AdBlue in the wrong tank: hire, lease and company cars

It is a car you have had for a week. Your own car either has no AdBlue or puts it elsewhere, so nothing told you the AdBlue inlet was just next to your diesel. Any driver, wherever around Derbyshire, could do the same.

What it means: the same as the situations above, depending on whether it has run, with one more stage. The owner often needs to sign off the work, under plenty of hire and fleet contracts.

What to do: ring the hire firm or your fleet manager first, then us. That is quicker settled before we turn up than after. Hanging on for an answer at the car park at Peartree, or near Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses? Leave your engine off throughout.

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Not sure, in Crewton

Now and then, "I think so" is all anyone can truthfully say. Lighter, the bottle; a hint of ammonia round the filler; no clear recollection of which cap. Sound familiar? A rushed stop by the gates of Lakeside Primary Academy, or a call to a friend in Boulton Moor: both fit.

What it means: a little spilled about your filler does no harm to your motor. The diesel tank with AdBlue in it is another story. Any AdBlue in that tank will be pulled in by starting the car, and the start wouldn't settle which it is in any case.

Next: assume it went in, and keep your engine off. Ring and give what you saw: we'd rather confirm a clean tank than drain one after your engine has been run.

Crewton: what every AdBlue drain has in common

The job begins the same way, whatever the case. We come to the car, whether it's on a forecourt, a drive, the car park at The Coronation or a side street close to NTCG Derby, and ask three things: what went in, about how much, and whether your motor has been run. Those replies determine this work, and you hear the quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol: AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested. Where your motor has not been started, allow about half an hour once we arrive, in most cases.

Our technicians fire it up last. Our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel before we leave. Lasting damage is very unusual if it is caught quickly, and the whole job is done where the vehicle is. For your insurer: the engineer's report and the VAT invoice. For you: payment on the day, no money in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
