AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crieff? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts until the engine pulls it round. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Crieff. Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

AdBlue in the diesel tank in Crieff: the first few minutes

Things to do:

  • Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.
  • Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.
  • Call just where you are. Say a PH7 3 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

  • No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift your car.
  • Turning the key to ignition by itself sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.
  • No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, and so it is wasted.
  • Even a short stretch along James Square is too far to drive the vehicle.
  • By the road, do not attempt emptying it yourself.

The staff on duty at any Crieff filling station — the Gulf among them — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask. If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor. From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits. Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

It does not combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It drops, because it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its fuel from. When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Gilmerton last night and not switched on stays the straightforward case, provided nobody touches your key.

Once it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms. Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; and, because it eats at some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside. By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Crieff with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is just in the tank, nothing changes. Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers no lubrication, which is a second form of damage.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Thames, and this issue is diluted fuel. No damage is done while it sits put, blended into your diesel — only when your engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn. It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Milton of Cultoquhey or the middle of Crieff.

The good news is the same as with petrol. Emptying a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around Perth and Kinross the car has stopped.

Crieff: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many vehicles sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light. Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills the car. A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off High Street. One more version: dim light, a pub car park outside The Square Bar and Kitchen, and someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels — the cars drivers know the least. Anywhere across Perth and Kinross, Crieff included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Crieff, and the motor started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is. It has been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may notice your motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Crieff Bowling Club or halfway across Crieff. When you safely can, stop then turn it off — without turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M90, under 15 miles from Crieff, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Crieff to the car park by Murray Fountain is one matter; heading towards Perth, under 25 miles away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts. Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up. Lasting damage is very uncommon if it's noticed early.

Crieff: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle remains put, whether that is a road near Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Crieff, and our van comes to it. Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and whether your motor has run, because those replies determine this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one when that tank is emptied, right there. Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Testing the car comes last, once clean diesel is added and your filter is cleaned or, where needed, swapped. Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs. Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes last. Then our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay by Gleneagles or a driveway around Crieff. The check before we head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel. The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage. Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Crieff?

There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Three things shift the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Crieff Baptist Church.

Before a figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Crieff opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran. Once those are answered, a range becomes one fixed figure.

Our quote is given on the call, before a van leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
