Cripps Yard: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the motor. Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue. It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system draws it in. If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully cleaned where the vehicle stands around Cripps Yard. Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

Cripps Yard, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

  • Pull your keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
  • Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.
  • Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.
  • Call just where you are. Say a SE10 0 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not:

  • Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: your engine remains off.
  • Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.
  • Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
  • Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Cripps Yard.
  • Draining the tank yourself beside the road is not one to try.

Rolling your vehicle off the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Cripps Yard forecourt you are on, the Shell or any other. Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just as it is.

What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor. From a separate reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits. Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel. It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from. A motor topped up on a drive in North Greenwich overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine turns, that is what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out. A car left sitting in Cripps Yard with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have an issue of thin fuel. Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it's harmless for now; using the motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether. Not burning, it can't simply be run through. It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Trinity Buoy Wharf or the middle of Cripps Yard.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol. Not started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside that tank, the simplest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere your car has stopped around Greater London.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Cripps Yard: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark. It usually occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases. Rushing, outside Millennium Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone refills the car. In the evening, a bottle goes in on a driveway close to Mitre Passage. One more version: darkness, the car park by The Dial, and someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, new motors, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it most. An identical mistake, an identical first response — leave it off — wherever you are in Cripps Yard or the remainder of Greater London.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Cripps Yard, and your engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank. Via your filter, through the lines, and — given any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Watch for lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Central Park, say, or midway across Cripps Yard. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the M11, under 10 miles from Cripps Yard, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to park — not driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Cripps Yard to the car park by Peninsula Spire is a very different job from a run towards London, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile. Tell us about how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has ended up. Lasting damage is very rare if it's caught quickly.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Cripps Yard?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Cripps Yard: a side street close to 33, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt. Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run: we ask before all else, because those decide the job.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once. With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush counts: the fuel system is flushed all the way through since residue won't wash away unaided. Next, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it must be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of your vehicle. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, provided your engine has not run. The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Priming the fuel system with fresh diesel comes last. Then our technicians start the car and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Canary Wharf or a driveway around Cripps Yard. The test before our engineers go is that it runs correctly on new diesel. We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Cripps Yard: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one single price could be honest, since each job is different. Three things move the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Head in the Wind.

What got in, how much, and whether it ran: every Cripps Yard call opens by asking precisely those, before any quote, never afterwards. Once they are answered, a range turns into one firm figure.

Before a van sets off, you hear the quote by phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.
