AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Croespenmaen? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your engine. Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is. The harm starts once it is pulled through the pump — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel. If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully cleaned where your car sits in Croespenmaen. No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in the diesel tank around Croespenmaen: the first few minutes

Do:

  • Remove your keys, and that prevents someone switching the power on.
  • If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.
  • Which fluid, and about how much amount? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will know.
  • Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting NP11 3, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Don't:

  • No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition the car.
  • Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, and so leave it off.
  • AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.
  • Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch up Parc Bevin.
  • Don't try to drain the car yourself by the roadside.

On a forecourt around Croespenmaen, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump. Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly as it is.

What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is. From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what the engine lets out. No part inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's. The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Millbrook last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of harm. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it is flushed out. A car left standing in Croespenmaen with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco. Damage just comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside your tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all. It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn. It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Gwrhay or the middle of Croespenmaen.

The same good news holds as with petrol. Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Caerphilly the car sits.

Croespenmaen: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody intends it. It usually takes place at home, from a bottle bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

The ways it happens are few and familiar. Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the car. Near Pen y Groes, a driver tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening. Otherwise, in dim light by The New Forge, your car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented vehicles, new motors, fleet cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it the most. Wherever you are around Croespenmaen or the rest of Caerphilly, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Already started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Croespenmaen?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Coed Cariad, say, or part way across Croespenmaen. Once safe, pull over and switch everything off — without turning it on again to test. Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 10 miles from Croespenmaen, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system, and so heading towards Newport, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Croespenmaen to the car park by Oakdale Library. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once the engine has run there is more of it. Permanent damage is very uncommon if it is spotted quickly.

Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Croespenmaen: what it takes

The car remains put, whether that is a road near Horeb Chapel, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Croespenmaen, and our van travels to it. The work rests on three replies, and we get first — what was put in, the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one. Residue from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested. About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs where the motor hasn't run. The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the fuel system with new diesel comes last. At that point our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking space outside Newbridge or a drive around Croespenmaen. Our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving. We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop. Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Croespenmaen: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because each callouts vary, a flat price would not be fair. The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Trinant Methodist Church.

What was put in, how much, and if it ran: each Croespenmaen call opens by asking precisely that, before a quote, never after. Given them, a range shrinks to one fixed number.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the quote by phone. Then payment is on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.
