AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crossgate? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition too. In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water. The harm starts once it is sucked through the pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel. A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Crossgate, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has been run. Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

Crossgate, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

  • Pocket the keys, which stops anyone switching the power on.
  • Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
  • The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so do not bin it away.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting ST15 8, or the name of the nearest street, gets the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.
  • Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition goes on, so leave the car off.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's pointless.
  • Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Sandy Lane.
  • Draining your tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

Rolling the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Crossgate forecourt you're on, the JRM included. On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the engine. From a separate reservoir it goes straight to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out. A fuel pump is not designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is nothing like diesel's. Denser than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the same place the intake sucks from. Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Mosslane last night and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of your tank, untouched — but it would be the first thing through if the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there. What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it is flushed out. A motor left sitting in Crossgate with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not. The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby. No harm is done while it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether. Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option. It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Stallington or the middle of Crossgate.

As with petrol, there is good news. Wherever in Staffordshire your car has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Crossgate

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light. Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways. A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Fulford Primary School. Close to Brooms Lane, someone pours a container in at home after work. Otherwise, after dark by The Shoulder of Mutton, your vehicle gets topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars get it the most — rentals, new cars, fleet ones, and the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels. Wherever you're in Crossgate or the rest of Staffordshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Crossgate?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank. Given any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the filter and pipework.

Maybe coming back from Schoolhouse Wood, or midway across Crossgate, the motor may run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall. No starting it again to check: stop when it is safe, then turn everything off. With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Crossgate sits under 10 miles from the M6; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Crossgate to park beside Fulford Village Hall and a drive of under 10 miles for Stoke-on-Trent are very distinct jobs. Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped. Permanent damage is very unusual if it's noticed soon.

What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Crossgate?

The car remains where it is, whether that's a street beside St Nicholas Church Fulford, a driveway, a layby or a filling station in Crossgate, and our van travels to it. The job rests on three replies, and our technicians get before all else — what went in, the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Next, draining the tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue in one go. The system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own. Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested. Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians get there, if the motor has not run. Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step. You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Crossgate or in a space by Blythe Bridge. It's tested on new diesel to make sure it runs correctly before we go. Our engineers do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a garage. Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Crossgate: the cost of fixing it

No single price could be honest, because every job differs. What moves the cost is, first of all, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and then where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind All Saint's Church.

That is why every call from Crossgate starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

The quote is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Look at your policy while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
