Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crossness
If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep your ignition off. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. The harm begins once it's pulled through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel. If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car stands in Crossness. Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.
Crossness, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once
Do:
- Take the keys out, and so no one switches the ignition on.
- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.
- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.
- Give us a postcode starting SE28 8, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you stand.
Things not to do:
- Moving your car just a short way is no reason to start your motor.
- Many diesels run their fuel pump the moment your ignition goes on, and so keep the car off.
- Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.
- Even a short stretch down Fairway Drive is too far to drive the vehicle.
- Do not try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.
Moving your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Crossness forecourt you're on, the BP or any other. On the drive, the car remains exactly where it was left.
AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does
AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine. From a separate tank it is fed straight to the exhaust, treating what your motor emits. A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never intended to travel through one.
It doesn't blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel. It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from. Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Belvedere overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the base of your tank, untouched — but it would be first through if the engine starts, before any diesel at all.
Two kinds of harm come from there. What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow channels and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is flushed out. A car left standing around Crossness with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not. Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a second kind of damage.
Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse
Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Morrisons, and the issue is thinned fuel. It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in your tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.
The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance. Because it does not burn, running it through is not an option. Whether the vehicle is in Abbey Wood or the heart of Crossness, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters more. Why: it will not remain mixed, so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next fill.
The same good news holds as with petrol. If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater London your car is sitting.
How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Crossness
It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light. Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.
A few familiar ways account for most cases. Hurrying, outside Castilion Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone refills the vehicle. Close to Bazalgette Way, someone tips a bottle in on that drive in the evening. Else, in dim light outside The Lakeside Bar, the vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.
The least familiar cars see it the most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the other car of a family with both fuel types. An identical slip, an identical first step — leave it off — wherever you happen to be around Crossness or the remainder of Greater London.
Crossness: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?
Then the AdBlue has left the tank. The fuel filter and pipework have had it sucked through, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.
Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may appear, maybe part way across Crossness or coming back from Wildlife Garden. Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check. With each start, more of it is pulled through.
Leave the M25, under 10 miles from Crossness, by the next junction and stop somewhere safe, not carrying on.
Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading for London, under 10 miles away, gives a far larger job than hopping across Crossness to the car park by Crossness Pumping Station. Let us know roughly how far it had come.
There's more to flush once your engine has run, and we do all of it where the car has come to a stop. Lasting damage is very unusual if it's noticed quickly.
Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Crossness: what it takes
Anywhere it has stopped in Crossness — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a road by The Link — the van travels to the car. Before anything else we ask what got in, about how much, and if your engine has run, because those answers settle the work.
The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when the tank is drained, right there. With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since what remains won't wash out by itself. Testing your vehicle follows at the end, after clean diesel goes in and your filter gets cleaned or, if needed, replaced. Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, if your motor has not run. Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no issue, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.
Last, the system is bled with fresh diesel. Then our engineers start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Barking Riverside or a drive around Crossness. Our engineers confirm it runs correctly on new diesel before leaving. Our engineers do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop. At the end, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.
About Crossness, briefly
Crossness is a suburban area in southeast London, situated on the banks of the Thames at a low elevation of around 6 metres. Crossness is characterized by its lakeside setting and is located near other suburban areas such as Thamesmead and Barking Riverside. Crossness has a population of approximately 1529 people and features predominantly terraced housing. Crossness is also close to nearby Lower Belvedere, with London city centre about 11.4 miles away.
Crossness and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area
AdBlue jobs in Crossness are passed to vans that serve the towns near it — Thamesmead, Barking Riverside plus Lower Belvedere — and most of Greater London beyond, throughout SE postcodes. Ring and ask rather than guess if you are close to a county line, or somewhere awkward to explain.
No towing is needed. In Crossness, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you works: your vehicle is drained on the spot, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.
What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Crossness?
There's no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same. Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Moorings Sociable Club.
Before any quote, never after, every enquiry from Crossness begins with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if the engine ran. Given them, a range shrinks to one fixed number.
Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance. Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
