AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Crowborough? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the engine. In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water. Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens till your motor sucks it round. In Crowborough, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is. First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

AdBlue in your diesel tank around Crowborough: the first few minutes

To do:

  • So no one can turn your ignition on, take your keys away.
  • Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.
  • The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the quantity, and so do not throw it away.
  • Call us from where you are. A postcode starting TN6 2, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

  • Shifting the car just a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.
  • Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.
  • No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not blend, so it's wasted.
  • Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance along High Street.
  • No emptying it yourself, at all, at the verge.

The staff on duty at any Crowborough filling station — the Morrisons included — will usually help pushing it clear if you ask. If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it sits.

AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is. It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it. Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of blending — quite unlike fuel. The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks. Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Blackness overnight and hasn't turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

After it is drawn in, the damage comes in two forms. What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out. Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Crowborough with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's only inside that tank, nothing changes. Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

Draining AdBlue from a diesel tank in Crowborough

Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that is the whole fault. Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside that tank, it does nothing.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance. Not burning, it cannot simply be run through. Deposits and corrosion remain after the next fill, and AdBlue separates again from your diesel, and so watering it can't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Poundfield or the heart of Crowborough alike.

The same good news applies as with petrol. Wherever around East Sussex the car has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

Crowborough: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of cars place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. No one means it. A container picked up when heading home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways. The top-up gets rushed outside St Marys Catholic Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were dropped in. A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Beacon Road, as the day ends. Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The Crowborough Cross, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol. Same slip, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Crowborough or the remainder of East Sussex.

Crowborough: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank. It's been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across Crowborough or coming back from Goldsmith's Recreation Ground. No starting it again to test: stop once it is safe, then turn everything off. Each start pulls more of that through.

Crowborough lies under 15 miles from the M23; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in, so heading towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, makes a far bigger job than crossing Crowborough to the car park by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped. Long-term damage is very unusual when it is noticed early.

Crowborough: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around Crowborough — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Community Church — our van comes to the vehicle. Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has run, since those replies decide the work.

Then the tank is emptied where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together. A careful flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't clear away on its own. Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and then the car is tested. Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs. Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last. Starting it comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, at the nearest station or on a drive in Crowborough. It is tested on fresh diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our technicians head off. Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it. Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Crowborough?

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same. Three things move the price: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind The Oasis.

What got in, what quantity, and if it ran: every Crowborough enquiry begins by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, never after. Once they are known, a range turns into one firm number.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront. Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.
